Seth Calhoun, an Okaw Valley athlete playing for the Decatur Commodores 13U traveling baseball team, earned a USSSA (United States Specialty Sports Association) World series medal for the Road Runner competition at the 40-team USSA 13U AA World Series held in St. Louis, July 9-16.

Calhoun got the best of more than 50 competitors, running 80 feet bases from home plate to home plate. Calhoun took first place, circling the bases in a time of 13.91 seconds. Calhoun earned a World Series USSSA medal for his accomplishment.

The Commodores Travel Team 2006 played their games this season in Illinois, while playing teams in tournaments from out of state (Wisconsin, Indiana, Missouri). The Commodores finished with a record of 31-19, with six rain-outs.

The Commodores qualified for the USSSA 13U World Series in the 16-team Father’s Day Bash tournament in Champaign on June 16-18. The Commodores took first place defeating the Indiana Lions, 12-2.

In pool play (10 pools, 4 teams per pool), the Commodores went 3-0, defeating the Topeka, Kansas Toros, 8-1, defeating the Jackson, Tennessee Titans, 1-0, and defeating the Tulsa, Oklahoma Cardinals, 4-3.

After winning their pool, the Commodores moved on to the double elimination stage. The Commodores lost their first game to the Kentucky Bluegrass Mustang Stars, 4-1. The Commodores bounced back to beat the Columbia, Missouri Lightning, 7-2, then lost to another Shelby area team, the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes, 7-1, to be eliminated. The Commodores finished 13th out of 40 teams in the World Series.

While at the World Series, a cook-out was held for players and families and including in the evening were individual competitions. Dylan Whicker competed in the Home Run Derby, Miles Henderson the Golden Arm competition and Calhoun the Road Runner competition.

Try-outs for the 2007 Decatur Commodores will be held this fall.
