The Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City junior high girls basketball took on cross-Shelby rural rivals Okaw Valley on Thursday and managed a split. CHBC 7th won, 26-23, but CHBC 8th lost, 40-33.

The CHBC 7th trailed  y one after the 21st period, but went on a 10-4 ruin to lead by 5 at the break, 16-11. Okaw cut the lead to 3 in the 3rd with a 6-4 run, 20-17. In the 4th, the effort was equal, 6-6, to secure the CHBC 3-point win.

Macee Rodman and Madison Dawson led CHBC with 8 points, each. Raeleigh Mills of Okaw led all scorers with 17 points (8 FGs, 1 FT).

The 8th grad tilt was CHBC's to lose and they did. CHBC opened with a 9-4 run in the 1st and weathered a 9-8 Okaw run in the 2nd to still lead at the half by 4, 17-13.

CHBC ran out on another 14-2 run in the 3rd to lead by 15 heading into the final 6:00, 31-15. Game over, right? Wrong. Okaw Valley answered again with a 16-0 run, tying the game at the end of regulation, as if the Bobcats didn't even play the 4th quarter, 31-31.

They went to overtime. Okaw Valley pulled away, 9-2 for the 7-point win. Free throws were huge in this game. Okaw Valley shot 28 free throws and CHBC shot 9, 19 less. Okaw made 12 of 28 and CHBC 3 of 9 for a 9-point difference in a 7-point win in overtime.

CHBC had 15 buckets for 30 points. Okaw had 13 buckets for 28 points (11-2s, 2-3s). Free throws one the game and denied CHBC the sweep.

CHBC had two players in double figures. Ruby Stuckemeyer led the game with 15 points (7 FGs, 1 FT) and Marissa Summers scored 10 (5 FGs). Zoe Johnson led Okaw with 11 points (4 FGs, 3/8 FTs). Rissa Montgomery followed with 8 points with 3 buckets, one a trey, and 1-of-3 at the line. Sidney Luckenbill made all four of her free throws.

CHBC 7th (5-3, 3-1 NTC) and 8th (4-4, 2-2 NTC) were to play Friday against North Clay.
