In the latest episode of CHBC v. Central A&M varsity girls basketball, Thursday night, it was a see-saw battle. This time CHBC came out on top, 44-40.
Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City and Central A&M girls basketball have gone at each other over the years. Since the A&M days of Megan Stringer, Jen Medler, and Shelby Jackson, both schools have had their runs and appearances at the state tournament.
Freshman Micah Jones joined Bailey Doty, Faith Wendte, Hillary Shelton and Courtney Myers and Jones led CHBC to state 3-years out of 4. Then came A&M’s Ryan Dooley, Mikah Maples, Taylor Jordan and Kaley Hennings. They earned a state title and went to state 3 straight years.
The last three years CAM had success, but neither CAM or CHBC made the Sweet 16.
Central A&M, even without senior post leader Channing Reed, took a slim lead in this game in the 1st, 10-6. But, CHBC would answer. Mikayla Denton buried an early 3 and then two free throws. Emma Beck hit a 3 and McKenna Denton had a two.
Jaelyn Robertson made a two and Carsen Burks a 3 in-between four free throws. She made one. A&M was up by 4.
In the 2nd quarter, the Bobcats slashed their way to a 14-2 run. Lani Morrison got loose. He made a deuce, a trey, and a deuce for 7 points. Burks and Gracie Heckert scored once, each. Lauren Wojcik converted a 3-point play.
Hannah Schinzler had the only A&M bucket, as CHBC passed A&M to lead by 8 at the half, 20-12.
After the break, CHBC continued their roll with an 18-11 run.Robertson broke free. She drew a foul and made both free throws. She scored three more times for 8 points in the period. Sydney Lorton scored twice and Mackenzie Bunch scored twice. Burks scored again.
Schinzler kept scoring for A&M. She scored three times in the 3rd. Both Dentons made solo twos. Beck split a pair at the line and the Raiders were down by 15 points going to the 4th, 38-23.
A&M made a late push, scoring 17 points down the stretch. The dentons scored 14 of the 17 points. Mikayla Denton sank a trey and two twos. McKenna Denton scored a 2, converted a 3-point play and another deuce.
That would erased the A&M deficit, but CHBC scored enough to hang on. Bunch had the only basket. Burks made 2-of-6 free throws. Robertson made 1-of-3 and Lorton made 1-of-2. Their seven points was enough for the 5-point victory.
Mikayla Denton led all scorers with 14 points with 5 baskets, including 2 treys and 2-of-2 foul shooting. Two other Raiders scored 11 points. Mckenna Denton made 5 buckets and 1-of-1 at the line. Schinzler finished with 11 on 5 more buckets with one 3.
CHBC was led by Robertson with 11 on 4 buckets and 3-of-5 at the line. Burks followed with 10 on 3 buckets (1-3) and 3-of-10 at the line. Morrison had 7 with a trey. Bunch had 6.
Only four raiders scored, while CHBC had 7 scorers. The extra points by role players gave CHBC the margin of victory.
