Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City junior high volleyball notched their first win of the season last week, beating South Central 7th, 25-14, 26-24. CHBC 8th lost in 3, 17-25, 25-16, 5-25. On Thursday, CHBC 7th lost to Ramsey in 3, 15-25, 25-18, 18-25, and CHBC 8th lost, 11-25, 22-25.
CHBC won the first set against South Central fairly easy, by 11 points. In the pendulum swing of the 2nd set, South Central challenged, and CHBC had to fight for the win in crunch time, 26-24.
"We are going to use our new formation as our regular one since we had to play it again," said CHBC coach Angela Jefferies. "The girls are getting used to it and doing quite well. They were excited to take away their first win."
CHBC served 10 aces and swung for 3 kills for 13 attack points out of 51 (25.2%)
Kyleigh Linder was the standout performer in this match. She served 11 points and served 6 aces. She also recorded 3 kills for 9 attack points. Birgen Schlanser was also solid at the line, serving 5 points and 4 were aces.

In the prime-time affair, South Central took game 1 and had an edge in the back and forth marathon, winning in 3 as CHBC, affected by illness, faded.
"With three regulars out and subs, we had to move some to different positions and bring up our 7th grade setter," said CHBC coach Angela Jefferies. "They actually made this change without too much difficulty and had some nice volleys. In the 3rd game, we had a major setback and couldn't pull through."
CHBC served 8 aces and hit 6 kills with one block for 15 attack points out of 47 total points (32%). Marissa Summers led CHBC with 7 points, 4 were aces, 1 kill and the only block, for 6 attack points.
Hadley Hagler swung for 2 kills and Ruby Stuckemeyer had an ace and 2 kills. Rodman had an ace and a kill. Katlyn Arnett had the only assist. Hagler and Koda Colman led on defense with 2 digs each.

On Thursday, CHBC took on Ramsey. The 7th grade couldn't get a streak going, losing in 3 sets.
"Ramsey had some great serves that we struggled to return. But, our serving percentage was also the lowest it has been this season."
CHBC was out-scored by 10, 68 to 58. They lost the 1st set by 10, 25-15, then won the 2nd set by 7, before losing the 3rd set by 7. CHBC served 18 aces and hit 6 kills for 24 attack points out of 58 total (41%).
Kyleigh Linder led CHBC again with 9 points, 6 aces and 4 kills for 10 attack points. Macee Rodman led at the line with 15 points with 6 aces and a kill for 7 attack points. Birgen Schlanser served 3 points and all 3 were aces. Ellie Miller served 2 points and both were aces.
Makayla Thompson had the other kill. Rodman had the only two assists and the only dig.
The 8th grade is still looking for their first win, after they lost to Ramsey in straight sets. They were out-scored by Ramsey 50 to 33. They lost by 14 in the 1st set and despite a bounce back for the 2nd set, still fell short by 3.
"The 8th graders struggled wit both serving and serve receive tonight," Coach Jefferies said. "Their average was only a little over 50% the 1st game."
They served 6 aces, hit 3 kills and stuffed 2 blocks for 11 attack points out of 33 (33%). They dished one assist and scooped 7 digs.
Hadley Hagler led with 4 points and 3 aces. She had one of the 3 kills for 4 attack points and led the defense with 4 digs. Marissa Summers served 2 points and both were aces. She added a kill and a block for 4 attack points. Audri Kaiser served 5 points.
Katlyn Arnett served a point and an ace and had the only assist. Abbi Morgason served a point and had one of the 2 blocks.
CHBC 7th (1-4) and 8th (0-5) host Neoga on Monday and then travel to St. Elmo on Tuesday. They host Stew-Stras on Thursday. CHBC 8th played at the Pana 8th tourney last Saturday. CHBC 7th will play at the Pana 7th tourney this coming Saturday.
