It was a tale of two grade levels, the best of times, the worst of times, as the Cowden-Herrick 7th grade ran their record to 15-3 (12-1 NTC) with a Tuesday win over Altamont, 25-114, 25-3, and the Hornet 8th grade took it on the chin again, losing the Altamont, 15-25, 7-25.

The Hornet 7th won game one easy enough, then was totally dominant in game two, outscoring Altamont by 33 points, 50-17.

"We started off a bit rough," said Hornet coach Angela Jefferies. "But the girls were able to quickly work it out."

Haven Lorton was the face of dominance at the service line, serving for 17 points and seven aces. She even was the chief net threat with six net points, a team-high four kills and the only two C-H blocks. As good as Lorton was at the line, teammate Ariel Heiserman was almost her equal, serving up 15 points.

With Lorton and Heiserman scoring 39 of the Hornets 50 points at the service line and at the net, the rest of the team didn't get to pad the stats much in the blowout.

C-H stats: Lorton 17 points, 7 aces, 4 kills, 2 blocks, 2 digs; Heiserman 15 points, 2 assists, 1 kill; Ashley Davis 3 points; Hannah Wehrle 1 point, 1 ace, 2 assist, 3 digs; Dakota Fouts 1 assist, 1 kill; Chloe Meek 2 points, 1 ace.

In the nightcap, the Hornet 8th were the flip side of the first match, competing in the first game for a while, then fading quickly in the second against, the team that just upset undefeated Stew-Stras.

"It has been a hard season for these girls," Coach Jefferies said. "Over the past weeks, we have been down to five 8th graders. We had just four (today) and played a very tough team. I was proud that they only had one missed serve."
