Shayla Darnell went from playing for the Shelbyville High School volleyball team in 2018 to be a leader in the front line for John Wood Community College.

In high school, Darnell was a sophomore on the 2015 2A IHSA 4th Place State team (37-3). As a junior, she was on the sectional finalist team (29-10), losing to Newton, {span}25-23, 25-22. As a senior, she was on the regional semifinalist Rams (20-11). After three 20-win seasons, she signed with John Wood in March of 2018 and played that fall. {/span}

Darnell’s freshman year, she was slotted as an outside hitter. She finished tops on the team with 195 kills and 2nd on the team with 20 blocks for a team-high 221 points in 30 matches. She also had 1 assist, 9 aces, and 97 digs.

Darnell played in all but 4 of the matches. She had six matches with double-digit kills. In 8 matches she scored in double figure points, with a season-high of 18, and a near season-high of 17.

She had a double-double against Lincoln Trail with 11 kills and a season-high 15 digs.

Darnell had a near double-double in the final match of the season against Frontier with 12 kills and 9 digs. She had her season-high hitting percentage of .286.

Her season-high kills were 18 in a previous meeting against Frontier with a season-high 18 points. She had 17 kills against Iowa Lakes with attack 17 points.

Her best month of play was September with 117 kills, 7 aces, 61 digs and 14 total blocks (10 solos), for 136 points.

The team finished the 2018 season with a record of 3-31. In 2019, they finished with a winning record (17-16).

In her second season at John Wood, the sophomore was moved to middle hitter and finished with 75 kills, 12 assists, 21 aces, 75 digs, 23 blocks, and 114.5 points in 22 matches.

Darnell played in four of the first 5 matches of the season, then missed 10 matches, and returned for the final 17 matches. She had 15 kills (3.75 k/m), 3 aces (.75 a/m), and 5 blocks (1.25 b/m) in those 4 matches for 22 points (5.5 pts/m) and John Wood went 2-3.

When Darnell returned, the John Wood went 8-9 and she had 60 kills (3.53 k/m), 18 aces (1.06 a/m), 18 total blocks (1.06 b/m) and 92.5 points (5.44 pts/m).

Her season high 10 kills came against Lewis & Clark in a 3-2 victory. She had an assist and an ace and an overwhelming season-high 19 digs. She had a solo block and finished with a season-high 12 attack points (kills, aces, blocks).

She had 8 kills against Hawkeye and 8 kills against East Central Missouri. She had 10.5 points against Hawkeye, 10 against East Central and 10 against Spoon River in a 3-1 win. She had a season-high hitting percentage of .364 with 5 kills, a season-high 5 aces and 3 digs.

The middle hitter had a season-high 4 total blocks against Lincoln Trail with s solo block and 3 block assists. She had a season-high 2 solo blocks against Marshalltown and Lincoln Land.

Her best month of play came in October. She hit 37 kills, 15 aces, and 13 blocks for 62 points in 11 of her 22 matches.
