A former Shelbyville Ram is now a member of the Illinois Basketball Coaches (IBCA) Hall of Fame.

Doug Graven, the son of Wendell and Fern Graven of Shelbyville, just completed his 25th season as a high school head coach with a 429-258 career record. He was inducted along with just nine other coaches in the Hall of Fame’s 2006 class (which also included Eastern Illinois University’s coach Rick Samuels).

Graven has spent the last 18 years at Auburn High School, where he has compiled a record of 319-187. His best season at Auburn was in 2003, where they went to State (26-4) and were led by his son, Bryon, who now plays as a junior guard at Millikin University. Three of the last four seasons, Graven’s teams have collected 20 wins or more.

Before going to Auburn, Graven coached three years at Easton with a record of 54-28, and two years at Niantic-Harristown with a record of 21-21.

Graven’s teams have won five regional tournaments, one sectional and one super-sectional. His teams have won 12 holiday tournaments. Graven was the IBCA District 18 Coach of the Year in 2003-04 and the Mid-Illinois Coach of the Year, the same season.

Wendell Graven was inducted into the IBCA Hall of Fame as a Friend of Basketball in 1991.
