The Windsor/Stew-Stras Hatchet girls basketball team was dulled by the Cerro Gordo Bement Broncos in their season opener on Tuesday, losing 33-19.

Both teams barely scored 50 points together. Without more offense it could be a long season for both clubs.

After the first period, Cerro Gordo was up, 8-5. In the 2nd frame it was almost a draw, CGB eking out a 1-point edge, 6-5, to go up by 4 at the half 14-9.

The 3rd frame CGB doubled-up WSS 10-5 to go out to a commanding 10-point lead, 24-14. The final nail in the coffin was a 9-5 run by the Broncos to win by 14.

It was an inauspicious start for the Hatchets, who lost three 4-year starters to graduation. It is the first season without all-stater Megan Schlechte, graduates Nikki Trussell and Katrina Davis. That trio had carried the Hatchets program for 4 years.

Mikala Nichols was the bright spot for WSS on Monday. The junior post player recorded a double-double and scored 68% of the team’s points, a third of their rebounds and 60% of their steals. Nichols had 13 points and 10 boards. Nichols made 6 buckets with 1-of-2 foul shooting. She added 2 blocked shots and 3 steals.

The rest of the offense was non-existent. Seven others players combined for just 6 points, total. Freshman Natalie Hayes had a bucket, 2 assists, and 3 boards. Serenity Weeden had a basket and 7 boards. Chloe Dasenbrock and Emma Sayers added solo free throws.

As a team the Hatchets shot 26% from the floor. They shot just of 8-of-27 from 2-point range (29.5%) and only took 3 from long distance, making none. WSS only shot 9 free throws and made just 3 (33.3%).

WSS grabbed 33 rebounds (10 offensive). They snared 5 steals and just 4 assists. They had 18 turnovers. Their assist to turnover ratio was 1 to 4.5.
