Cowden-Herrick saw blood in the water and they went into Comet Country on Friday and beat Stew-Stras, 61-58.
Stew-Stras was at home on Friday against NTC and rural route rival Cowden-Herrick. Normally, the Comets win that match-up. The Comets are not as strong this year and they tried to avoid a loss to the Hornets, but the Hornets wouldn't go away. They stayed close and then made their move late to get the 3-point win.
Hornet senior Alex Turner came up huge in this game, scoring a game-high 18 points, including a pair of 3-pointers and 4-of-8 at the line. Teammate Jalen Hovis followed with 15 points and his own trey. Derrick Knearem and Tyson Morgason made it four Hornets in double figures with 10 points, each.
The Comets had balanced scoring with three players in double figures and two more on the threshhold. Austin Carson and Zach Rincker had 11 points, each. Rincker had a trey. Nicholas Ferris had 10 points and recorded a trey hat trick in the process. Post presence Matt Tabbert had nine points and the off guard Luke Rincker came up with eight points, including a trey.
Neither team was scintillating at the line. Cowden-Herrick was just 11 of 27. Stew-Stras could have tipped the scaled their way in the 3-point loss, but they were just 11 of 22 at the line.
Nicholas Ferris got the Comets going in the 1st period by dialing in twice from long distance. Zach Rincker also scored from the arc and then hit a deuce. Carson scored from the floor as the Comets posted a 14-point period.
However, the Hornets matched that. Turner got off the dime from the opening tip, scoring three times and getting to the line and making 1-of-2 shots for 7 of his 18 points in the first 8:00. Luke Moore a leading scorer in many games for the Hornets, also got off early, scoring all five of his points in the 1st period. Tyson Morgason aded a deuce to make it a 14-14 ball game after one.
Justin Fulk came off the bench for the Comets and scored all five of his points ( 2-2s, 1/2 FTs)to lead the Comets in the 2nd. Zach Rincker scored twice from the floor and Carson once. Luke Rincker made 1-of-2 at the line for a dozen Comet points.
Once again, the Hornets matched that. Turner stepped out to the arc and made both of his attempts. Hovis, Knearem, and Morgason added solo twos and the teams were still tied at the break, 26-26.
After the break, both teams amped up their efforts, scoring a combined 37 points. Stew-Stras scored 19 points in 8:00 and Cowden-Herrick scored 18. Stew-Stras got balanced scoring, while Jalen Hovis went off for the Hornets, scoring 8 of his 15 points in the 3rd.
Hovis scored three times from the floor and made 2-of-4 foul shots. Derrick Knearem converted a 3-point play, Turner made 2-of-4 foul shots and Shane Mitchell had a deuce and 1-of-2 at the line, totaling Hornet 18 points in 8:00.
However, the Comets had seven players score in the 3rd. They got a trey and a deuce from Luke Rincker and a trye and 1-of-2 free throws from Ferris. Zach Rincker, Lucas Helton, Tabbert, and Henry Ballinger all had solo twos. Carson added 2-of-2 free throws and the Comets finally had a 1-point lead heading into the 4th, 45-44.
However in crunch time, the Comet guards went silent, while the Hornets kept coming. Matt Tabbert broke loose inside the paint, scoring 7 of his 9 points in the 4th. Austin Carson score 5 of his 11. But, Luke Rincker was the only other Comet to score in the final 8:00.
The Hornets didn't slow down. They got three scores from Morgason and a trey and 2-of-4 at the line from Knearem ( 5 of his 10 points) in crunch time. Hovis knocked down a trey and Turner had a deuce and 1-of-2 at the line. The Hornets went from down two to up three before the buzzer ended the battle.
