Shelby Jr. Legion baseball started strong on Monday against Moultrie Douglas, notched a win, then settled for a split. They won game 1 in a walk-off, 10-9, then were left behind in game 2, 11-6.

Shelby Jr. Legion built an 8-0 lead through 3 innings on Monday night in game 1. Moultrie Douglas then mounted two rallies, a 3-run and a 6-run to tie the score in the top of the 5th, 9-9.

In the bottom of the 5th with one out, Sam Vonderheide walked and Hunter Reed smacked a double. With two men in scoring position, Bo Christer put a ball in play. The 2nd baseman booted it and Vonderheide scored the walk-off run for the win.

It wasn't the first time Christer drove in Vonderheide in the game won by 1 run. Christer grounded out in the 1st inning, for another RBI as Vonderheide scored from 3rd to make it a 2-0 lead.

That was a similar scenario as in the walk-off. Bryce Beiber led off with a walk and Vonderheide singled. Smacked his first double, scoring Bieber, 1-0. Then came Christer's ground out RBI of Vonderheide.

Seth Robertson started the game for Shelby and was having his way early on. In the 1st, he got a batter a ground out to Gannon Beals, 2nd to 1st. He gave up a walk, then Another ground out to Beals was turned by Bieber at 2nd and then to 1st for the DP. In the 2nd, Robertson got a fly out to center., then hit a batter. He followed with consecutive Ks.

Shelby added a run in the 2nd. Brendan Schoonover led off with a single. Parker Dixon drew a walk. A wild pitch advanced the runners. Brayden Girtzmacher lifted a sacrifice fly and Schoonover tagged a raced home. Dixon tried to go to 3rd on the play and was thrown out, 3-0.

In the 3rd, Robertson gave up a walk, but responded with consecutive Ks again. He threw a walk, then got the last out on a fly ball to reed in center. Shelby launched a 5-run 3rd.

Nick Nohren led off with a single. With one out, Bieber singled. Vonderheide hit into a fielder's choice and the rally was in jeopardy. Hunter Reed came through again. He singled in a run. Christer was interfered with by the catcher and got a pass to 1st to load the bases with two outs.

Vonderheide scored from 3rd and Robertson hit a fly to left and it was missed. Reed scored. Christer got to 3rd and Robertson to 2nd on a wild pitch. Beals hit a double to center, driving in 2 runs, 8-0.

In the 4th, Mo Do made their move. Robertson struggled with a walk, a hit batter and a walk to load the bases unearned. Payton Bryant came on in relief. Before he could settle in, the next batter doubled in two runs. The runner on 3rd tried to steal home and was out as Bryant made the tag.

The fifth batter in a row to reach base, singled a run in, 8-3. Finally Bryant settled in and struck out 2 of the next 3 batters to end the rally. Shelby got one run back in the 4th. Schoonover led off again with a single. Gritzmacher walked with one out. Max Doris clubbed a double, driving Schoonover home, 9-3. That run would also count in the end.

In the top of the 5th, Mo Do started with a single, but then was doubled-up. Bryant fielded the ball, threw to 2nd for one out and Beals turned it and threw to 1st. Mo Do would not be dissuaded. They singled, walked and singled, 9-4. A hit batter and a double made it 9-6. Two consecutive Ram errors allowed Mo Do scores, 9-8. A wild pitch made it a tie game, 9-9. Bryant rang up the batter and it was back to square 1.

Fortunately, with a half inning left in the scheduled 5-inning gmae, Shelby was able to hit their way to the walk-off win.

Hunter Reed went 3-for-3 with 2 doubles and 2 RBIs, while Brendan Schoonover went 2-for-2 with 2 runs. Beals and Doris also doubled.

After Mo Do got traction, although they didn't quite get the win in game 1, they still were on a roll. They built a 7-0 lead in game 2, before Shelby knew what hit them.

Shelby starter Parker Dixon walked the first two batters he faced. A fly out to Brayden Gritzmacher in left became a sacrifice fly. A single made it 2-0. Shelby came to the plate, grounded otu and struck out twice. Max Dporis hit a single, but was left on.

Mo Do backed up the truck and unloaded lumber in the 2nd. After a lead-off walk and a Dixon K, a double and a fielder's choice with everyone safe made it 3-0. A wild pitch scored a runner, but a runner was out stealing by Beals at 3rd. Three consecutive singles and a double, buried Shelby, 7-0. Sam Vonderheide came in to pitch and got the strikeout to end the blood bath.

Shelby tried to gin up a comeback in the 2nd. Payton Bryant walked amd Schoonover walked with one out. Dixon was hit by a pitch. Brant Bowker hit a bases loaded single, driving in 2 runs. Dixon stole 3rd and Reed lifted a sac fly, as Dixon tagged and scored, 7-3. Beals reached on an error and Bowker sscored, 7-4.

Shelby was back in the game, but still behind. Vonderheide threw 2 Ks in the 3rd and got a ground out to hold serve, despite an error and a single. Shelby crept closer in the 3rd. Bieber walked with one out. With two outs, Doris walked. Robertson was thumped and the bases were loaded. They brought in a new pitcher and he threw a wild pitch, scoring Bieber, 7-5.

Mo Do then extended their lead. A lead-off error and a hit batter was followed by a single. That set up a score on a fielder's choice with everyone safe, as the play at the plate failed, 8-5. They did catch the next runner stealing home for the 1st out. A single drove in two, 10-5. A walk and a score on a passed ball made it 11-5, before Bowker squeezed a pop up at 1st.

Shelby was shut out in the 4th, despite a Schoonover single. A walk and a hit batter accomplished nothing in the Mo Do 5th, as three fielder's choices, kept them in check. Shelby needed 6 runs in the bottom of the 5th. They got one and done.

Gannon Beals reached on a 1-out error. Bo Christer singled. Vonderheide singled and Beals scored, 11-6. Bieber walked, but a K and a ground out ended the game for the split. Shelby only managed 5 hits from different players in game 2 with no extra-base hits.

Bowker was 1-for-2, scoring a run and driving in 2 runs to lead Shelby. Vonderheide singled and drove in one run. Reed's RBI came off a sac fly.

Shelby County Jr. Legion (4-6) plays next on Friday at Greenville against Highland and Bunker Hill, then one game on Saturday.
