The Lady Rams varsity and JV were herded into an ambush Monday night in Monticello, as the varsity was field dressed, 65-31, and the JV was roasted on the spit, 61-19.

Without Brittany Davis and Ann Nottingham, out with an injury, the Lady Rams are filling holes at the post and trying to stay afloat. Katy Thomas helped out with 3 rebounds, a steal and a blocked shot, Monday night. But, the boat still took on water early and the S.O.S. went unanswered.

The varsity fell behind in the first period 17-5, getting solo buckets from senior leaders Marissa Watson and Rachel Burgess and 1-of-2 from the line from the lone remaining starting post player, Ashley Rork. The Sages scored at will with seven buckets and made 3-of-4 foul shots.

Watson and Burgess took the Rams on the shoulders in the second period and Watson scored three times in the period for six points and Burgess hit 1-of-2 free throws and a pair of deuces. But, the Sages scattered 13 points to extend to a 14-point lead at the break, 30-16.

The third quarter the Rams were drawn and quartered with a 17-2 Monty blitz. Burgess, who had a team-high 15 points, had the lone Shelby score in the period as the Rams fell into the abyss, down by almost 30 heading down the stretch, 47-18.

Shelby spent the fourth quarter logging trips to the free throw line, making 9-of-14. Burgess was 4-of-6 at the line, Staci Navis 1-of-2, Katy Thomas 2-of-2 Katee Lira 1-of-2 and Rork 1-of-2. But, the Rams still were not able to get going from the floor. Burgess and Rork had the only two baskets for the Rams in the fourth.

The preliminary JV tilt was an ominous foreshadowing of the coming varsity storm, as the JV never broke into double digits in any quarter and couldn’t stop the Sage JV from picking up steam and rolling down hill for the 40-point victory.

The hole wasn’t too big after one, thanks to solo buckets from Cassie Schneider, Kelsey Finks and Staci Navis and good enough defense to hold the Sages to 13 points. Then the wheels came off.

The JV only maaged to score 13 points the rest of the way, while the Sages ran up the score.

Thursday night will be the Rams Senior Night as the Ram varsity and JV will host Maroa with JV action beginning at 6 p.m.
