lakers 12U trophy

The Lady Lakers 12U pose with their championship Charleston Tournament Trophy.

The Lady Lakers 12U softball team went to Charleston over the weekend, won the 4-team tournament and now prepare to host Charleston for the Lakers final home games of the summer.

The Lakers beat Sullivan in the championship game. 5-1, after dismissing Charleston, 15-1, and coming back against the Robinson Rebels, 8-5.

“The girls did well in the heat, said Laker coach Tony Moll. “We fielded the ball much better and hit it very well. Pitchers performed well. Gave us the opportunity to move girls to different positions and get some good playing time in. Cinnae Martin did a great job behind the plate handling Sid and Taylor.”

The Lakers will host the host team from last weekend, the Charleston Chill, on Wednesday night, July 19, for a doubleheader, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

The Lakers, now with over 50 wins this season and just 20 losses, will finish up their season at the Mattoon Bagel Fest tournament this coming weekend (along with the Laker 10U and 14U teams).

“All the girls have made great strides this year. Not just in the fundamentals of the game, but also the understanding of how to play the game, Coach Moll said. “We can now execute double steals off the bunt, delayed steals and many other thinking plays of the game. It is great to watch this group mature as young adults and ball players. The 12U Lady Lakers are known in the area for great hitting and pitching. Most of all they are known for their great sportsmanship and the never give up attitude. One coach told me we have the scrappiest bunch of kids he had ever seen at this level. We have had parents of opposing teams write into our web-site saying how well the girls carry themselves on the field. It is one thing to have a winning record but when you have a winning record and great kids and parents it is truly a team.”

Lady Laker try-outs for the 2007 teams will be on August 12.
