Mitchell, Spain 1600

Ailey Mitchell was State runner-up in the 3200 meter run at the IHSA 1A State Track Finals on Saturday. She was also 3rd in the mile. Gabby Spain (shown behind Mitchell in the 1600 prelim) was 12th in the 800 meter run finals. The two scored 22 points for 10th place.

The distance duo of Ailey Mitchell and Gabrielle Spain gave Shelbyville girls track the highest team finish in school history at the IHSA Class A State Track Meet on Saturday, placing 10th with 22 points.

"On Saturday, Ailey and Gabby did a great job of representing the Lady Rams," said Ram coach Jason Palmer. "These two athletes have helped to lead our team during the season. Their work ethic and dedication is something other athletes can follow."

Mitchell ran the 3200 final on Saturday and placed 2nd in the state. She finished in 11:20.75 19 seconds behind the champion and 9 seconds ahead of the 3rd place finisher. Mitchell also ran the 1600 final on Saturday. She finished 3rd in the state in a time of 5:17.88.

"The temperatures were much warmer than had been experienced throughout the season. Ailey did an amazing job of culminating with her two State Medals highlighted by her 3200 runner up, and 1600 3rd place finish."

Spain scored a 3rd place finish in her other event, the pole vault, clearing 11 feet, a school record. Spain finished 12th in the 800 finals (2:28.26).

"Gabby made the finals in the pole vault (Thursday) with her vault of 10 ft," Palmer said. "She also made the finals in the 800 with a personal best of 2:21.86. She ran a great race to make the finals. Ailey Mitchell ran a great 1600 on Thursday with a new PR of 5:11, winning her heat."

Carson Beyers just missed making the finals in the pole vault and Olivia Durbin in the discus.

"Carson vaulted really well," Palmer said. "She just clipped her last attempt at 10 feet that would have put her in the finals. Olivia Durbin did a great job this year, recovering from a preseason injury to improve throughout the season and return to the State Meet. I look forward to Carson, Olivia, and Ailey being team leaders next year. These three have been state qualifiers all three years."

The girls who represented us at State did a great job. The girls gained valuable experience for the future.

The Ram 4x800 relay runners at state were Rachel Throneburg, Elizabeth Bowyer, Brook Schutt, and Ella Tynan. They ran 11:58.59.

"The 2019 Lady Rams have laid the foundation for the future and the success of this season is because of their hard work and dedication."
