Shelbyville senior Ailey Mitchell took 2nd place at the Charleston Cross Country Meet on Saturday and sophomore teammate Gabrielle Spain was 4th to lead the Rams to 6th place. The Shelbyville boys finished in 10th place.

Mahomet-Seymour won the girls meet with 63 points, followed by Urbana (72 pts), Mt. Zion (80 pts), Charleston (106 pts) and Champaign Central (129 pts). Shelbyville scored 133, edging Mattoon (137 pts), while Champaign Centennial (226 pts) rounded out the field.

Urbana (63 pts) and Mahomet (69 pts) finished 1 and 2 on the boys’ side. Mattoon was 4th (99 pts), Charleston was 8th (193 pts), followed by Effingham in 9th (233 pts), Shelbyville (235 pts) in 10th and Sullivan finished the field (304 pts).

Shelbyville girls were able to squeeze past Mattoon for 6th place by just 4 points.

Mitchell and Spain finished 2nd and 4th. Mattoon’s #1 Kylie Haacke was 6th and Quincy Collings was 12th. Shelby was ahead 6 to 18. Mattoon got Mickenze Schofield in at 24th and Shelby’s #3 Brook Schutt was 49th.

Mattoon was ahead 42 to 55. Then Shelby got the #4 and #5 runners in, Ellire Nohren (58th) and Trinity Wade (60th). That capped their score at 173. Mattoon was looking for their last two scorers at the chute.

Their #4 came in at 75th for a total of 117 points and no way to pick off the Rams. There last girl came in in 80th place. Adjusting for runners finishing ahead with no team score, Mattoon’s final total was 177, just behind Shelby.

Shelby boys just missed picking off Effingham by two points for 9th place. Effingham’s #1 Afredo Lopez was 16th. Shelby’s #1 was Cody Rohdemann in 40th, right behind Effingham’s #2 Clayton Cramsey in 39th. The 14 places between Effy’s #1 and the rams #1 was too big to overcome.

Shelby’s #2 Phoeniz Firnhaber was right behind Rohdemann in 42nd and then Breyton Beck (Ram #3) was in 44th. Shelby had 3 in and Effy 2. Calvin Miller (Ram #4) finished 48th and Effy still had no #3.

Effingham finally had their #3 in 63rd and their 4th in 66th. Will Miller was the rams #5 at 72nd. He edged Effingham’s #5 who was 73rd, by less than a second. Despite that, Effingham still came in 2 points better.

The course was 3.03 miles long.

Shelbyville hosts the middle school and high school Shelby Trail Invite on Saturday at Forest Park, at 9 a.m. and 11:15 a.m., respectively.
