The Moulton Lady Rams ran roughshod over Argenta-Oreana in seventh and eighth grade volleyball action on Thursday night, with the Moulton sevenths cruising through a two-game sleeper, 21-3, 21-7. The eighths encountered stiffer competition and actually trailed 3-7 in game one before mounting a rally to take two at 21-11, 21-10.

In the seventh grade games, the Lady Rams exploded for 21 service aces. Shannon Boone held the hammer that drove the spikes, with 18 points and two kills. Taylor Rhodes came in with eight points and Ashley Bitting hit for six. Hollie Schultz scored four points and Ali Hankins and Taylor Blackford hit three each.

Suspiciously, when there are 21 aces, one dig and only four assists in two games, that indicates the ball is simply not being returned by the opposing team. Moulton seventh grade coach Stephanie Fleener commented to that effect. “There was not much game play tonight. We served great, with 21 aces as a team. Shannon (Boone) had a huge service run to put game one out of reach. The girls are starting to come together as a team and have really shown improvement this week in both practices and games. We just have to work to not settle and keep pushing ourselves to get better.”

The seventh grade Lady Rams go to 5-3 on the season, 3-2 in conference, and next travel to play Monticello on Saturday.

Moulton 7th stats: Hollie Schultz 4 pts, 1 assist; Taylor Rhodes 8 pts; Ali Hankins 3 pts, 1 kill, 1 assist; Taylor Blackford 3 pts, 1 kill, 1 dig; Ashley Bitting 6 pts, 1 kill, 2 assists; Shannon Boone 18 pts, 2 kills.

In the eighth grade contest, the Lady Rams played hard and took advantage of mistakes and sideouts to win 21-11, 21-10. A service run of nine points and two aces by Erin Yockey, dug the Rams out of an early 3-7 hole, boosting them to 11-7. The never trailed again after that.

Moulton eighth presented a balanced scoring attack, with the points spread over several hitters. Alexis Flore and Erin Yockey held co-honors for high points, just ahead of Stefanie Shanks with eight. Jackie Wiseman and Lexi Jarnigan checked out with five points each and Brittany Peifer nailed down three. Ranae Julius hit for two and Tarci Howell had one. Flore led in assists with five and Jarnigan led in kills with three. Jarnigan, Julius, and Shanks held a three-way tie for most digs with three each.

Moulton eighth grade volleyball coach, Lisa Peifer said, “We played a good match and capitalized on their errors. They had some big hitters and we did a good job at the service line keeping them from getting a good pass so they couldn’t work their offense. Alexis Flore, Stefanie Shanks and Erin Yockey did a great job at the line, and Lexi Jarnigan took some really strong swings on offense. We are coming together as a team and are finding ways to win even when we don’t play our best. It was a good night by everyone.”
