Shelbyville Moulton girls basketball got swept twice prior to the conference tournaments this weekend. Shelby 7th got beat on Monday by Maroa-Forsyth, 36-10, and the 8th grade got beat, 29-23. Ram 8th got beat on Tuesday by Nokomis, 28-10, and the 8th got beat, 35-27.
On both nights the Ram 7th grade got left behind by their opponents and the Ram 8th grade competed, but couldn’t keep up.
Maroa-Forsyth and the Ram 7th were locked in a tight battle. They were tied at the end of the 1st period, 5-5, and were separated by just two points, 6-4, at the half, 11-9.
In the 2nd half the Rams were almost shut out. Maroa had an 11-0 run in the 3rd and then a 14-1 run in the 4th. They were out-scored in the final 12:00 25 to 1.
Maroa made a trey and a deuce in the 1st. Kenzie Jones made a bucket in the 1st and marley Phelps scored from the floor and made 1-of-2 foul shots. In the 2nd, Jones and McKinley Hippard had solo scores. M-F got 3 solo buckets to lead by 2.
In the 3rd, MF nailed a 3 and four buckets by four players. Shelby had no baskets and no free throws even shot, like they weren’t even on the floor. Maroa was prohibitively ahead, 22-9.
In the 4th, Shelby shot 3 free throws. Kagome Brown was 1-of-2. Maroa had five players hit single baskets and one a pair of twos. They went from a 13-point lead to a 27-point margin of victory, rubbing salt into the wound.
Kenzie Jones led Shelby with 4 points on 2 baskets. Briscoe led Maroa with 8 points on 4 field goals. Two Trojans had solo 3s.
Maroa 36, Shelbyville 10

The prime-time game was odd. Shelby opened with a 9-0 run. Kinzee Musser scored twice and Dru Clark converted a 3-point play. Gabby Golding scored. Maroa didn’t even shoot a free throw.
But in the 2nd quarter, Maroa exploded on a 17-4 run.Golding had a free throw and a deuce. Musser made one free throw.
Park came in and lit up the gym. She had a 2 and a 3 in the 7th grade game. She made 1-of-2 free throws then consecutive 3s. She made both ends of a 1-and-1 for 9 points by herself. Bohlmann made two foul shots and two buckets. Livingston had a two.
At the half, Maroa was up by 4, 17-13. The 3rd was a low-scoring quarter with Shelby taking it 5-4. Musser scored once and Dru Clark made 3 foul shots. Reid and Bohlmann had solo two and it was a 3-point Maroa lead, 21-18.
In the even quarter, the 4th, Maroa pushed forward again on an 8-5 run. Golding scored and Musser made 2 foul shots, Dru Clark one. Briscoe, Bohlmann and Ravenscraft had solo baskets. That secured the win and Bohlmann made two more free throws.
Shelbyville shot 32 free throws. They made 9 and missed 24 in a 6-point loss. Maroa shot 13 free throws and made 7.
Musser led Shelby with 9 points, while Clark and Golding had 7 points, each. Bohlmann led the game with 12 points. Park sparked the rally and had all 9 of her points in the 2nd.

After the Monday sweep at Maroa, the broom went to Nokomis. Shelby 7th was stuck on 10 points again and lost by 18. The 8th grade game was all over the place like a water park wave pool, up then down, then anyone’s guess. When the horn blew Nokomis had completed the sweep.
Nokomis doubled up Shelby 7th early, 8-4. DeWerff scored twice and Hill and Brownback once, each. Kenzi Jones scored all four Ram points on 1-of-2 at the line and a 3-pointer.
The 2nd frame, Nokomis left the Rams grazing on an 11-2 run. Hill scored twice and made a free throw. Brownback, DeWerff and another Hill had solo scores. Adison Musser had the only Ram score as Shelby fell behind by 13 at the half, 19-6.
The 3rd period was a Nokomis scrimmage, 4-2. Hill and Brownback scored for Nokomis and the Rams go a solo two from Taylor Culumber. Down by 15 heading to the 4th, the grave was being dug, 23-8.
M DeWerff, Waterman and Glenn had single scores for Nokomis down the stretch, Culumber, again, had the only Ram score of the 4th sealing the 18-point loss.
G DeWerff and Brownback led Nokomis with 6 points each Eight players scored for them. Culumber and Jones led Shelby with 4 points, each. Three players scored for them. Jones points came in the 1st and Culumber’s the 2nd half.

If the 8th grade Ram could make free throws, they would have won Monday and Tuesday. On Monday they missed 24 foul shots in a 6-point loss. On Tuesday, they missed 13 free throws in an 8-point loss.
Nokomis launched out to a 17-8 lead in the first 6:00. The Rams were without forward Dru Clark, who had 7 points on Monday.
Kinzee Musser scored for Shelby and made 1-of-4 foul shots. Millie Clark scored once. Marley Phelps made 2-of-4 foul shots. Gabby Golding made 1-of-2. They shot 4-of-10 from the line.
Nokomis got three scores and a free throw from Keagy. DeWerff scored twice, while Bertolino, Hill, and Brownback scored once, each for the 9-point lead.
Shelby swung the pendulum the other way in the 2nd with a 10-4 run. Musser nailed a 3 and Jayna Longwell and Jordynn Mayhall made twos. Millie Clark made 1-of-2 foul shots. Golding made a 2.
Only Keagy and Mehochko had buckets in the 2nd for Nokomis and their 9-point lead shrunk to 3 at the half, 21-18.
In the 3rd period Shelby took the lead with a 7-3 run. Golding made 1-of-2 free throws and then a two. Musser made two free throws and Longwell scored again. Nokomis got a bucket from Bertolino and a free throw from Mehochko. Shelby led 25-24.
It was like a brand new game after turmoil of the first 3 quarters. In crunch time, Nokomis scored from the floor. Shelby didn’t and they struggled to make free throws. Nokomis finished with an 11-2 run.
DeWerff scored twice Ward converted a 3-point play. Bertolino and Keagy capped their scoring with solo twos. Mayhall made 2-of-2 foul shots.Musser missed two and Golding made 1-of-2. They shot 2-of-6 with the game on the line.
Kinzee Musser and Golding led Shelby with 8 and 7 points, respectively. Musser made a deuce and a trey and 3-of-8 from the line. Six Rams scored. Keagy led all scorers with 11 points on 5 buckets and 1-of-2 at the line. DeWerff followed with 8 all field goals. Six players scored.
Shelby finished 10-of-23 at the line, with 7 field goals. Nokomis only shot five free throws, but they made twice as many field goals (16).
