Okaw valley Middle School softball outlasted Altamont on Thursday, battling to the win, 14-10.

Each team had a big inning and found themselves tied after 4 innings, 9-9. Okaw pushed through to claim control and win.

They hit about the same. Okaw Valley had 8 hits and Altamont 7., But Okaw Valley defenders also played soccer, booting the ball 11 times. What saved Okaw was that they drew 15 walks and gave up zero walks.

Lana Ashley walked 4 times. Rissa Montgomery and Lindsay Ozier walked 3 times, each. McKenna Phelps and Regan Coleman walked twice, each.

Reese Nichols didn’t walk, but she did hit 3-for-5 with a triple, 3 runs, and 2 RBIs. Raeleigh Mills was 2-for-4 with a triple, 2 runs and an RBI.

Okaw got on the board first in the 1st. Montgomery and Phelps walked to start the game. Ashley singled with one out for the 1-0 lead. Megan Roley was thumped, but was left on.

Altamont tied the game in the bottom of the inning. A lead-off error for a round-tripper, 1-1. Ashley and Mills threw out batters on ground balls and Nichols snagged a pop up at short.

Okaw had their big inning in the 2nd. Lexi Mashaw was hit and Ozier, Montgomery and Phelps walked, 2-1. Nichols singled two runs in, 4-1. Ashley walked and Phelps scored on a wild pitch, 5-1. Megan Roley singled driving in two runs, 7-1. Mills singled Coleman walked.

Finally, they made an out. Ozier batted around and walked Mills scored on a wild pitch and Montgomery walked, 9-1.

Ashley KO’d a batter, but she made 1st on the drop. A groundout and two more Ks stymied Altamont. Ashley walked in the 3rd, but was stranded. Altamont got a run back in the 3rd. Ashley struck out two, but a single and a passed ball made it 9-2.

Ozier walked in the 4th, but was left on. Altamont had a big inning in the 4th. Two singled were followed by an errors another single and an error. A sac bunt made it 9-6 with one out.

A single another dropped 3rd strike and an error complicated things for Okaw, leading 9-8. Another error tied the game, 9-9, before Ashley rang up the 3rd out.

Okaw came back with an answer in the 5th. Nichols led off with a triple. Ashley walked again. Megan Roley reached on an error for the lead, 10-9. Ashley scored on a wild pitch and Mills walked, 11-9. Coleman walked but was stranded by three straight outs.

A lead-off triple threatened Okaw in the Altamont 5th. Nichols was pitching and she rang up two straight batters. A ground out to Mills at 3rd stopped the run.

Okaw hammered in more nails in the coffin in 6th. With one out, Nichols singled and Ashley walked. Roley ground out and drove in Nichols, 12-9. Mills launched a triple and scored on an error, 14-9.

Altamont had to score in the 6th. They got a single and another error, but a Nichols K and two pop ups to Ozier at short diminished the rally, 14-10. Okaw went in order in the 7th.

Altamont popped out to catcher Megan Roley in the 7th. The next two grounded out to the pitcher and Okaw notched the win.

Okaw Valley (2-3) hosts Nokomis on Tuesday.
