Kate Jeffers scored the go-ahead bucket with 28 seconds left to give Okaw Valley girls basketball the 1-point win over Nokomis at home on Saturday, 29-28.

The game was nip n’ tuck the whole way. Nokomis led after the 1st period by two. Okaw Valley tied the game at the half. Okaw Valley led the game by 1-point after three quarters. Nokomis took a 1-point lead with 30 seconds to go. Jeffer’s bucket and solid defense gave Okaw the win down the stretch.

Audrey Sabol gave Nokomis a 6-4 lead in the first on three baskets. Bailey Bennett scored Okaw’s four points from the floor. After the low-scoring 1st, both teams picked up the pace.

Nokomis launched solo treys from Emma Sneddon, Addison Dangbar, and Jayme Johnson. Okaw made free throws.

Mia Harris had a two and 1-of-2 free throws. Bennett made two free throws. Jeffers made a two and 2-of-2 free throws. Shyanne Harding had a bucket for a 2-point edge in the period and a 15-15 half-time tie.

Dangbar scored twice in the 3rd period. Mia Fessor and Sabol added solo twos for 8 points.

Avery Bruns gave Okaw the edge in the 3rd. She scored from the floor and made two foul shots. Jeffers had a two and Harris had a two and 1-of-3 at the line, for a 1-point lead, 24-23.

Down the stretch, defense was key. Sabol scored a deuce and 1-of-2 foul shots. Dangbar scored. Bennett launched an Okaw bomb from downtown, but Nokomis led by one with 30 seconds left. Jeffers scored and Nokomis couldn’t score in the final 25 seconds.

The only player in double figures was sabol for Nokomis with 11 points. She had 5 buckets and a free throw. Dangbar scored 9 points from the floor, including a trey.

Bennett led Okaw with 8 points on 3 baskets (1-3) and 2-of-2 at the line. Jeffers followed with 8 points on 3 buckets and 2-of-2 at the stripe. The difference in the game was Mia Harris’ 6 points on two buckets and 2-of-5 at the line and Avery Bruns’ 4 points in the 3rd.

Okaw had 10 bucket (1-3) for 21 points, while Nokomis had 12 buckets (3-3s) for 27 points. Okaw was 8-of-13 at the line and Nokomis was 1-of-6, a 7-point edge in a 1-point loss.

Okaw Valley girls improve to 6-15 on the year and host ALAH on Monday.
