Pana had to go some to overcome against a hopeful Vandalia squad. The Panthers finally pushed the Vandals aside in overtime to claim the 3rd place game at the Vandalia Holiday Tournament, 77-65.

It was a sprint in the 1st period as the Panthers barely nipped the Vandals in the first 8:00, 18-16. The defenses settled in the 2nd period and the Vandals were able to tie the game at the break, 29-29. The 3rd period was another hotly contested offensive period with 34 points scored in 8:00 and the teams locked up at 46-46.

Down the stretch, the teams were on just as torrid a pace and had to go to OT tied at 63-63. They took a short breather and came out for the OT tip and only one team had any energy to got the extra session. Pana went on a 14-2 run and left Vandy in a heap.

The Panthers had four players in double figures, including the top two scorers in the game. Jared McMillen had a game-high 18 points, followed by Mitchell Beyers with 17 (1 trey). Lucas Rochkes (1 trey) and Nick Spracklen had 11 and 10 points, respectively. Phillip Arnold almost made it five players in double figures, scoring nine points (1 trey).

Vandy had three players in double figures, but not at Pana’s level. Hosick led Vandy with 15 points, Godoyo had 13 (1 trey), and Johnson 12 ( 4 treys). Vandalia did have a huge advantage at the line on their home floor. That kept them in the game. Vandy got to the line 16 times and Pana just 10 times, making 7-of-9 (77%). Vandy shot 18-of-31 (58%) and gained a double-digit advantage at the line. Without that, they would have never survived regulation.

Pana returns to regular season action on Saturday, hosting conference foe Hillsboro.
