As expected, powerhouse Pana demolished Mt. Zion for the IESA 8AA Girls Volleyball Sectional Championship, 21-6, 21-3. Pana came into the tourney boasting a 22-1 record against Mt. Zion with a mere 4-16. Last week, #1 seed Pana fended off #2 seed Moulton-Shelbyville in the Regional Championship.

Michelle Day and Alyson Alde tied as top strikers for the Lady Panthers with 12 points each, with Day leading in aces with five and assists with 12. Katie Lees held the hammer on kills with eight. Shanna Barror also had a good game with seven points and Grace Holthaus came in with three points.

In game one, Pana used only four players at the service line; Michelle Day, Shanna Barror and Alyson Alde and Grace Holthaus. Day led off at serve for the Lady Panthers after a spike by Katie Lees and sideout gave Pana a 2-0 lead. Day remained at the line for 10 serves including two aces. Zion mistakes and bullets from Lees put Pana up 11-0 in a jiffy. Barror later took the line for Pana, holding court for seven serves, with two aces. Hali Carls nailed a spike and the Zion defense fell apart, letting serves and sets fall between players. Grace Holthaus closed out the scoring for Pana in game one with an ace to win easily, 21-6.

In game two, Pana led off with an ace by Day and net point by Holthaus to lead 2-0. Mt. Zion lobbed one in the hole for 1-2. A service error on the Lady Braves gave Pana a 3-1 lead.



Then Alyson Alde went on a 12 –serve run including five aces to blow it out to a 15-1 Pana lead. Zion got a block point at the net to get their second point, but the Pana scoring machine only paused for a minute before Holthaus served game point, 21-3.

The eighth grade Lady Panthers are now at 23-1 on the season and will next travel to state and take on Chatham-Glenwood, 11-1, at Stephen Decatur Middle School, Saturday, March 18 at 9:30 a.m.
