The Central A&M Raider girls basketball team had a rough start this season without post player Channing Reed. However, they finished the Pana Thanksgiving Tourney strong.

A&M beat Okaw Valley in a pool play crossover match on Friday, 52-18. They then knocked off Athens in the 5th place game on Saturday, 51-30. Reed led A&M against Okaw Valley with 15 points and had 10 points against Athens.

The Raiders charged out to a 15-4 lead over Okaw Valley in the first 8:00. Reed was fouled and made two free throws. She then scored twice and was fouled again, making 1-of-2 foul shots for 7 points. Lanie Sams and Mikayla Denton sank solo treys and McKenna Denton had a deuce.

Okaw Valley only got solo twos from Kate Jeffers and Bailey Bennett and trailed by 11 points.

A&M slowed a bit, but still went on an 11-2 run in the 2nd. Reed scored two more times and split a pair at the line. McKenna Denton scored twice and Sams made two foul shots. The only Timberwolf to score was Shyanne Harding. A&M was up by 20 at the break, 26-6.

The 3rd period went to the T’Wolves, 11-8. Jeffers broke free and after making1-of-2 at the line, scored three times from the floor. Avery Bruns scored and Mia Harris scored.

Julia Braundmeier cashed in an A&M 3 and Mikayla Denton scored a two. Reed made 1-of-2 foul shots and a deuce. A&M still led by 17 heading to the 4th, doubling up Okaw, 34-17.

In crunch time, A&M crunched Okaw, 18-1. Five Raiders scored. Emma Beck converted a 3-point play and then a two. McKenna Denton scored twice. Hannah Schinzler got on the board with a trey.

Braundmeier had a two and 1-of-2 foul shooting. Sams also made 1-of-2 at the line and a deuce. The only Okaw player to score late was Kate Jeffers, making 1-of-2 free throws.

Reed led A&M with 15 points in just 3 quarters, five from the floor and five from the line. McKenna Denton followed with 10 points on 5 buckets. Sams scored 8 points with a trey and 3-of-4 free throw shooting. Braundmeier also had a deuce and a trey and a throw for 6 points.

Jeffers led Okaw Valley with 10 points. No one else had more than two points.

In the 5th place game, A&M got another early lead, let up a bit then poured it on.

A&M opened with an 11-4 run. Reed scored then made two free throws. Mikayla Denton splashed a 3, Sams scored and Schinzler made two free throws. Athens got a solo 3 and just 1-of-6 foul shooting to start the game down by 7.

Athens pushed back with a 10-7 run in the 2nd. They had two buckets from Morgan, one from Bryant, one from Purchis, and two free throws from Cronister. But again, they were just 2-of-7 from the stripe in the period, 3-of-13 in the 1st half. A&M still led by four at the break, 18-14.

A&M raided Athens in the 3rd, 21-9. Six Raiders scored. Mikayla Denton made a trey and a 3-point play. Schinzler had a trey and a deuce. Sams hit from distance. McKenna Denton scored and Victoria Billups scored. Reed had a free throw and a deuce.

Athens finally made free throws in the 3rd, 6-of-6 from Cronister. She then converted a 3-point play for all 9 of their points. A&M was up 16 heading to the 4th, 39-23.

Athens couldn’t cut the lead in the 4th. A&M secured the win with a 12-7 run. Mikayla Denton scored twice and then made two free throws. Reed finished with a 3-point play and Schinzler made another trey.

Athens got one bucket late from Hall. Cronister made 4-of-6 foul shots. Meiners made 1-of-2 to fall back by 21 points at the buzzer.

A&M had 3, almost 4, in double figures. Mikayla Denton led with 13 points on 3-2s and 2-3s, with 3-of-3 at the line. Reed had 10 points on 3 buckets and 4-of-5 at the line. Schinzler had 10 points on two treys, a 2 and 2-of-2 at the line. Sams had 8 points on 2-2s, a 3 and 1-of-2 free throws.

Cronister was consistent and led Athens with 15 points. She made one bucket and 14-of-19 foul shots. No one else had more than 4 points.

Athens was just 3-of-13 in the 1st half at the line, but in the 2nd half they got 12 of their 16 points from the line (12-of-17).
