Schinzler working

Hannah Schinzler led A&M with 22 points on Thursday, scoring 7 times, 3 from the arc, and making 5-of-5 free throws to beat Warrensburg, 51-37.

It was q close game at half-time, but then the Central A&M girls basketball team pulled away from Warrensburg for a 14-point win, 51-37

Playing Warrensburg can be a frustrating experience with their great defensive effort. A&M edged them in the CIC Tourney consolation final game last week, 37-35. They avoided the same fate with stronger 2nd half play, this time, and a heroic performance by Hannah Schinzler.

Schinzler had just four points in the 1st quarter. With the Raiders trailing 15-14 to start the 3rd Schinzler drove and was fouled. She made both free throws. She scored from the floor and then was fouled on a score. She made the free throw for a 3-point play and 7 points in the A&M 3rd quarter, 18-10, run.

In the 4th, Schinzler launched a sortie of 3 straight, 3-point missiles. She was fouled again and made two more free throws for 11 points in the 4th, 18 points in the 2nd half, for a game-high 22 points.

A&M doubled-up the Cardinals in the low-scoring 1st, 10-5. Schinzler scored twice and McKenna Denton scored twice. Mikayla Denton scored once and Post Channing Reed was held scoreless.

Warrensburg got a deuce from Brooke Oakley and a triple from Brittney Oakely and that was it. Fate flipped in the 2nd as Warrensburg went on a 10-4 run. They got solo buckets from Leathers, Dutcher, and Brooke Oakley. Both Oakleys added two free throws, each to add to the 18-10 run.

A&M could only manage solo baskets from Mikayla and McKenna Denton, as they fell behind by a point at the half, 15-14.

Schizler donned her Superman cape after the half. Mikayla Denton was also effective, scoring 3 times in the 3rd. McKenna Denton made 1-of-2 foul shots and two more field goals.

Warrensburg tried to stay with A&M. Britt Oakley scored twice and Cutler added a two. Leathers and Klein scored once, each, but they now trailed by 7, 32-25.

Would the pendulum swing back in the 4th? Not if Schinzler had anything to say about it. Boom! Boom! Boom! Reed finally go in on the act. She missed two free throws, but then scored from the floor and made two free throws.

McKenna Denton had a deuce and Julia Braundmeier added to the 19-12 run with a two, for a 14-point win.

Brit Oakley tried to match Schinzler’s firepower. She made two 4th quarter fee throws, then scored three times from the floor for 8 points. Dutcher had a solo two, while Brooke Oakley and Cutler added 1-of-2 trips to the line.

Schinzler not only shot lights out from the floor, she was a perfect 5-of-5 at the line. A&M was 8-of-11 and Warrensburg was 8-of-15. Brooke Oakley was 3-of-4 and Brit Oakley was 4-of-7.

Britt Oakley finished with 17 points on 6 scores, including an early 3 and her free throws. Brooke followed with 7 points.

The Dentons helped pace the Raiders. McKenna scored 13 points with 6 scores and a free throw. Mikayla had five scores from the floor, as the third Raider in double figures.

Central A&M (21-8), is the sub-sectional #2 seed and the top seed at Arthur. They open their Arthur 1A Regional play on Tuesday at 6 p.m. against the winner of the Okaw Valley v. Meridian game on Monday.
