Although the Shelbyville cross country boys finished eighth (192 points) and the girls finished fifth (137 points) at the Robinson meet on Thursday, Coach Kevin Kramer, who is looking more at the postseason, was pretty pleased.

“I was very happy with the girls,” Coach Kramer said. “We left four of the top seven girls at home and we still finished fifth, just 24 points out of fourth place and 27 points out of third. Three of the girls finished together (within 2 seconds of each other). Emily and Elizabeth Karraker both cut their times. For them to run that fast after a hard week of practice was amazing. I thought they’d be dead.”

The boys finished eighth, but they were working on strategy more than on their position at the finish line.

“Ryan Brown didn’t run because he had a muscle twinge,” Coach Kramer said. “We were just being cautious, he could have run. I wanted Shaun Nibbe to go out harder than normal and stay with the leaders and he stepped it up. He was fifth until the last mile. It helped and I think he’ll be where he needs to be at the end of the season. Stanley (Donahoo) and Chris Mosley ran back with Kaleb Pruemer and Nate Bly to try to improve their times. It helped Nate Bly run an 18:30 on a tough course with long grass.”

The strategy meet was a success, according to Kramer.

“We weren’t concerned about our finishes,” Coach Kramer said. “We’ve been finishing ahead of Cumberland and they placed third. We probably couldn’t have beaten Robinson, but if we had been running the way we usually do, we would have finished second or third. We met the goals we had and I was happy with the turn-out.”

The Rams will practice again this week and run at Metamora, another grass course, to prepare for the upcoming conference meet and Sectional.
