The Shelbyville Moulton 8th grade Rams (7-0, 3-0 Okaw) followed up their pull away win over Monticello on Saturday, 25-22, 25-13, by surviving an Okaw Valley comeback on Tuesday, 25-11, 25-23. The Ram 7th grade completed the sweep of Okaw Valley by winning, 25-14, 25-20.

"The kids got a little rattled with Monticello's block, but finally started working around it," said Ram coach Lisa Peifer. "They controlled the 2nd set pretty well to take the match. We only had 2 service errors, which is helping us keep teams out of system. It was nice to get another conference win."

After surviving the 1st set against Monticello, the Ram 8th blew the Sages out of the water by 12 points. Despite the 2-set win the rams managed just 20 attack points out of 50 (40%) with 11 aces, 7 kills, 2 blocks.

Graycee Gottfriedt had a great match serving 13 points with 3 aces and a kill (4 attack points). Mallory Holland had a team-high 7 attack points with 4 aces out of 8 service points, hit 2 kills and rose for a block. Mia Wade served 3 points, and hit 2 kills, rose for a block and scooped a dig.

Saturday

Shelbyville def. Monticello, 25-22, 25-13

Ram stats: Mallory Holland 8 points, 4 aces, 2 kills, 2 digs, 1 block; Graycee Gottfriedt 13 points, 3 aces, 1 kill, 2 assists, 1 dig; Gracee Tucker 12 points, 2 aces, 4 assists, 2 digs; Mia Wade 3 points, 2 kills, 1 dig, 1 block; Emily Oligschlaeger 4 points, 1 ace, 1 dig; Carli Canada 8 points, 1 ace, 1 dig; Erin Hall 1 point, 1 kill; Sophie Ogden 1 kill; Alivia Young 1 dig; Macy Owens 1 point. 

On Tuesday, Shelby 8th was all over Okaw early, winning the 1st set by 14 points. They out-scored Okaw in the 2-set match, 50 to 34. They attacked from the line with just 7 aces, but swung for 14 kills, plus 5 blocks for 26 attack points out of 50 (52%).

"The first set of this match was one of the best games we've played," Coach Piefer said. "The kids were moving and talking and we were really putting pressure on them from the service line. We are working on moving faster and we did some really nice things at the net. I was very happy with the first set."
 
Mia Wade finished the match with 10 points and 3 aces. She also scooped a team-high 8 digs. Carli Canada served 11 points with a team-high 4 aces. She added 2 kills at the net to record 5 attack points. Canada also swung for 4 kills to score 8 attack points.
 
"The 2nd set was a bit of a different story. We started slow and were playing catch up the whole set. A couple of serving errors and quite a few unforced errors put us in a hole that we had to fight out of. We were down, 17-23, when Gracee Tucker went back to the line and finished out the match."
 
Tucker finished the match serving an 8-0 run, with a team-high 13 service points. She also dished a team-high 7 assists and sung for 3 kills. She was part of 10 attack points.
 
Mallory Holland was the net defender, scoring two blocks to go with her 3 kills for 5 attack points. She was also one of the top defenders with 6 digs.  
 
Graycee Gottfriedt followed up her top Monticello performance as the all-around player for the Rams against Okaw. She served 5 points, hit 2 kills, rose for s block, dished 4 assists and scooped 3 digs, tallying 3 attack points.
 
"I was proud of how the girls responded to that set and fought to win. They were pretty excited and I was happy for them to pull this game out!"
 
Ram 8th will play against Mt. Zion on Friday with the 7th grade starting the competition at 4 p.m.

Tuesday

Shelbyville def. Okaw Valley, 25-11, 25-23

Moulton 7th grade, in the Tuesday prelim, suffered the same fate as the 8th grade. They won easy early on against Okaw Valley and then were challenged in the 2nd set. 

"We really stepped up at the service line," said Ram 7th coach Maggie Bosgraaf. "We were consistent and Kinzee (Musser) did a great job serving aggressively to pull us ahead in the 1st game. The girls communicated and worked the net well."

Musser served a season-high 22 points and a full half of those serves were aces (11). Musser also dished a team-high 4 assists. Addalynn Miller followed with 8 points and 3 aces. Amber Lewis served 6 points and swung for a team-high 4 kills. Caroline White led the defense with 5 digs.  

Shelby held off the Okaw charge in the 2nd set by just 5 points.
