Shelbyville 7th and 8th grade volleyball took care of business on the road at Monticello on Saturday. Ram 7th won a close match in straight sets, 25-20, 25-23, and Ram 8th was steady, pulling away, 25-18, 25-13.

The Rams only out-scored the Sages by 7 points in a tough conference match-up. They won by 5 points in the 1st set and winning by just two points in the 2nd set. They served 8 aces and hit an outstanding 18 kills for 26 attack points out of 50 (52%).

“The girls did a great job,” said Ram 7th coach Maggie Keown. “We played our game and had fun. We were able to find the open spots in their defense, and our middles did a good job putting the ball in those places. I saw some really awesome things, that I hope we will continue to do.”

Maisie Kull was the chief Ram threat serving 12 points with a team-high 4 aces and a team-high 5 kills for a team-high 9 attack points. Kylie Gordon served 9 points with 2 aces and hit 4 kills for 6 attack points.

Setter Jaycee Brinkoetter served 9 points and dished 9 assists for a near double-double and added a team-high 5 kills and 6 digs.

Marley Phelps had an ace and 3 kills for 4 attack points and led the defense with 10 digs. The defense did their job, scooping 30 digs to dissuade the Sages.

Saturday 7th

Shelbyville def. Monticello, 25-20, 25-23

Ram stats: Maisie Kull 12 points, 4 aces, 5 kills, 1 assist, 3 digs; Kylie Gordon 9 points, 2 aces, 4 kills, 4 digs; Jaycee Brinkoetter 9 points, 5 kills, 9 assists, 6 digs; Marley Phelps 7 points, 1 ace, 3 kills, 2 assists, 10 digs; Ashlyn Behl 6 points, 1 ace, 2 assists, 1 dig; Mischa Beals 5 points, 1 kill, 1 assist, 3 digs; Ceccillia Lamb 2 digs; Briley Schutt 1 dig.

In the 8th grade won by 19 points with a 7-point safe win and a double-up 2nd set winning by 12.

“We were still missing a few girls due to sickness and other commitments, but we manages to pull off another win,” said Ram 8th coach Meleah Brinkoetter.

Shelby served 10 aces and hit 10 kills with 3 blocks for 23 attack points out of 50 (46%).

“We are struggling on our passing and have our setter, Kinzee (Musser) running all over the court,” Brinkoetter said. “So, we can’t run our offense. We will be working on this during practice, so we can get our middle more involved. Then we can run a quicker offense, which will help keep our opponents off guard.”

Despite that, middle hitter Dru Clark had an impact with a team-high 6 attack points on 3 kills and a season-high 3 blocks. Emily Duckett stepped up with 4 kills.

Millie Clark served an outstanding 18 points with 3 aces. She added a kill for 4 attack points. Kinzee Musser served 8 points with 2 aces and Ella Storm 7 with 3 aces.

Musser had all 7 Ram assists towards their 10 kills (70%). Storm and Duckett led the defense (18 digs) with 7 digs, each.

Shelby 7th (5-1, 3-0) and Shelby 8th (6-0, 3-0) play host to Okaw Valley on Tuesday, then go to mt. Zion on Friday at 4 p.m.
