The Shelbyville Ram baseball team (21-11) started as a work in in progress this year. Coach Sam Mehl progressed them right into a 20-win season and an appearance in the regional championship.
Shelby beat St. Teresa on Monday, 7-1, to go to 20-11, then beat Arthur in 5 innings in the regional semi on Thursday, 11-1. They will play #1 sub-sectional seed Carlinville (21-2) at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Kentrell beck took the mound for the Rams and threw a 2-hitter, waking one and striking out 8. The Rams batters pounded out a dozen hits, 11 singles and double from Beck.
The Rams primed the pump with two hits in the 2nd and 3 in the 3rd, then unleashed a barrage of 6 hits in the 5th culminating in a sac fly walk-off, 10-run dismissal.
The Rams went in order in the 1st, after Beck struck out the sides in the Arthur 1st. A ground out, to Malcolm Miller, short to 1st was the 1st out in the Arthur 2nd. Beck threw his 4th K, then Hunter Reed made a play of a pop up to 3rd.
Shelby got on the board in the 2nd. Freshman Ethan Clark led off with a walk and Colten Reed singled. Arthur changed pitchers. AJ Stokes reached on a fielder's choice, forcing Clark at 3rd. A passed ball put Colten Reed at 3rd. Hunter Reed singled his brother home. Noah Trimble walked and Stokes scored on a wild pitch, 2-0.
Arthur got a run back in the 3rd. A lead-off walk, a passed ball and a wild pitch set up the score. Beck still almost saved the shutout. But with two outs, the lead-off hitter singled the run home, 2-1. The next man reached on an error, but a runner was out on the base paths.
Shelby got that run back in the 3rd with three consecutive hits to start the at bat. Rece Pullen singled. Beck singled and Clark singled Pullen in. Beck scored on a wild pitch as the next three batters struck out, 4-1.
Beck threw a K in the Arthur 4th, but then gave up a 1-out double. He responded with another K. The catcher, Stokes, then made a play to 1st for the 3rd out. Miller singled with two outs in the Ram 4th, but was stranded.
The bottom of the Arthur order went in order in the 5th on a fly to right, a grounder to Beck and beck's 8th strikeout. Shelby caught fire and finished the game in the next half-inning.
Beck led off the Ram 5th with a double. He stole 3rd and scored on a ground out RBI by Clark, 5-1. Colten Reed singled, Stokes singled. Hunter Reed singled his brother home again, 6-1. Arthur changed pitchers again. Stokes scored on a wild pitch, 7-1. Trimble walked and Grant Mose singled a run in, 8-1.
Miller singled a run home, 9-1. Pullen reached on an error, scoring Bryant, running for Mose, 10-1. With one out, beck lifted a fly ball to right. It was caught and Miller tagged up and scored to end the game, 11-1.
Eight Rams hit safely and 4 had multiple hits. Miller was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Beck was 2-for-3 with a double, 2 runs and an RBI. Colten Reed was 2-for-3 with 2 runs and Hunter Reed was 2-for-3 with a run and 2 RBIs.
