In an evenly matched season-opener on Tuesday, the Ram boys basketball team nipped Hillsboro in overtime on a buzzer-beater, 77-74.
Shelby led most of the way. Hillsboro was down by 9 with 2:30 left in the 3rd, but made a comeback. They trailed by 6 points to start the 4th. An 8-0 run in the 4th gave the Hilltoppers the lead. It was a battle the rest of the way.
With 5.2 seconds left in regulation a Hail Mary bank 3 tied the game for Hillsboro, 66-66. Shelby’s Kade Kull went 3/4 of the court on the inbound, but had to take a bad fade shot and the game went to overtime.
Hillsboro started to build a lead in the 4:00 extra session. They made 2 free throws, 68-66. They made another free throw. Shelby couldn’t get on the board in the OT. With 2:00 gone, Hillsboro had a fast break 2 and was up by 5, 71-66.
Shelby’s Wyatt Nothaus grabbed a defensive rebound and was fouled. With 1:40 left in OT, he made one free throw for the first Ram score in OT, 71-67. Hillsboro missed and called timeout.
On the inbound, Kull drove the floor and was left alone on a defensive switch from the corner. He drove, was fouled, scored and made the free throw with 1:10 left to trail by one, 71-70. Hillsboro made a free throw.
Kull cashed in a bank 2 at the Ram end and got no foul call, but the score was tied with 44 seconds in OT, 72-72. Kull inadvertently fouled a Hillsboro player and he made 1-of-2 foul shots for the lead, 73-72.
After a timeout, Kull’s shot was blocked, but Nothaus got the carom and tried to shoot underneath. He was fouled. He made both free throws with 15.8 seconds left for the Shelbyville lead, 74-73.
A bump foul was called at the Hillsboro end with just 8.2 seconds left. The shooter made 1-of-2 foul shots for the tie, 74-74. After a Ram time-out, Kull tried to create a shot, but was covered.
He dished to Jason Beaudry in the corner. Beaudry had played in the JV game and made two 3-pointers. he played limited time in the varsity game with no points. Beaudry lifted a 3-point effort at the buzzer. It swished for the win.
The game was tied after the 1st period, 13-13. Shelby then went on a 24-15 run. Kull made a 2 and launched a 3. Nothaus scored. Kull crossed the top of the key and hit a step back 3. He was triple teamed the next time down and disahed to Ethan Clark, who dialed up a triple, 26-19.
Hillsboro scored twice, then Nothaus dished to Kull for 2. Kull scored again. Kull was blocked, but Payton Bryant snatched the ball and scored, 32-23.
Hillsboro made a 3-point play, but Bryant back cut, got a pass and scored, 34-26. Hillsboro scored, but there was 25 seconds left in the half. Shelby worked it and Clark set a hard pick as Kull lined up a 3 at the buzzer, 37-28.
Kull opened the 2nd half scoring with a transition 3 for the biggest lead of the game, 40-28. Hillsboro scored four times. Nothaus broke the spell with a put back 2. Bryant picked off a pass in the Hillsboro half-court and went coast to coast for 2, 44-36.
Hillsboro scored, but Clark nailed a 3. Each team scored. But Hillsboro made a 2 and then a 3 to make it a 4-point game, 49-45. Nothaus grabbed an offensive board and was fouled. He made both free throws for the 6-point lead, heading into the 4th, 51-45.
Kade Kull led all scorers with 38 points. He had 15 field goals, 5 treys. Nothaus followed with 15 points, including 7-of-10 at the line. Ondrey led Hillsboro with 26 points on 11 buckets. Vogel followed with 23 points on 9 buckets (3-3s).
Shelbyville (1-0) plays next at Okaw Valley on December 6.
