The Shelbyville softball team (8-11) chased the Meridian Hawks (20-4) on Wednesday, but never could catch up, losing 11-5.
Meridian went up 2-0 and the Rams followed scoring one run. Meridian scored 4 runs and the Rams followed, scoring 3 runs. The Hawks scored again and again and the Rams followed with a solo finish in the loss.
Joselyn Lewis took the loss for the Rams, but walked no one and KO'd 5. Despite 13 hits, 7 of the 11 runs scored against her were unearned. She threw 1st pitch strikes to 22 of the 33 batters she faced. She threw 82 strikes and just 29 balls.
Her counterpart, Peyton Latham walked 4, KO'd 9. She also had just 4 earned runs against her. Shelby needed more unearned runs to stay even with Meridian.
The Hawks out-hit the Rams 13 to 7 with 4 extra-base hits and Shelby had one.
Allison Schuricht singled in the Ram 1st, but was stranded. Meridian then got on the board. A double, a ground out and a triple made it 1-0. An error on the play let the tripler home, 2-0. Lewis threw a K and catcher Kaytlin Tucker gunned down a base stealer to end the rally.
Alexis Rohdemann led off the ram 2nd reaching on an error. With two outs, Mikaela Boehm walked to keep the inning alive. She stole 2nd and Jaylin McCabe, driving her home, 2-1.
Lewis threw a K in the Hawk 2 and Ale McCarter snared a liner at 2nd. But a single and another triple, made it 3-1. It was just a 2-run game, but the rams went in order in the 3rd. They held serve in the Hawk 3rd and kept things close. Again in the 4th, the Rams got nothing.
It's hard to contain the Hawks for long. In the 4th they sparked a 2-out rally. Consecutive singles with one out set the table. But Lewis threw a strikeout. She threw a strikeout that would have ended the inning, but the strike was dropped and the runner made it to 1st to load the bases with two outs. A double scored two and a single scored two more for a huge Hawk lead, 7-1.
Shelby had their own rally in the 5th to try to answer. With one out, McCarter walked and Schuricht singled. Lewis hit a timely double for an RBI. On a ground out, Schuricht scored and courtesy runner Rebecca Tichenor went to 3rd.
With two outs, Rohdemann singled and Tichenor scored, keeping the game in reach, 7-4. However, the hawks pushed the lead back out in their 5th. A single, and error made it 8-4. A bunt out scored another run, 9-4.
Shelby went in order again in the 6th and Meridian scored two more runs. With one out, consecutive singles set the table again. A ground out drove one run home and another single made it 11-4.
Shelby had a long 7th inning with two outs, but only got one run out of it. Schuricht singled with two dead. Lewis walked and Tucker singled to load the bases. Rohdemann drew a walk and forced in a run. A K put the game in the books, 11-5.
Schuricht led the Rams at the plate. The speedy #2 batter went 3-for-4, scoring 2 runs and stealing a base. After Wednesday's game, Schuricht tied Lewis for the most hits on the team (19), hitting .333.
She is second to McCarter in runs scored (13). Despite only hitting 2 doubles and a triple, she is secodnd on the team in slugging percentage (.404).
