Shelbyville and Okaw Valley boys and girls track have dipped their toes in the water as winter turns to spring, competing in indoor meets.

Shelby boys competed at the Knights Boys Meet at Principia College on February 22. They tallied 7 Top 10 finishes and were ahead of the curve in fresh-soph events.

At Jacksonville Indoor last Saturday, Shelby boys, along with two girls, and Okaw Valley boys and girls dove into the fray. Shelby boys and girls had 10 Top 10 finishes, while Okaw Valley girls had 7 Top 10 finishes, including two 1st place finishes.

“The highlights of the season so far are sophomore Phoenix Firnhaber finishing 6th in the 1600 and senior Colton Miller finishing 6th in the triple jump at Jacksonville,” said Ram coach Chris Mosley. “We have a good mix of both young and old guys, so I’m excited to see what we can do.”

Okaw Valley hurdler, junior Macie Fleshner beat all the other 26 runners in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 9.60. She was also on the 4th place Okaw Valley 4x400 relay team with Madalyne McPheeters, and Kylie and Karlie Stauder (4:31.09).

Kylie Stauder tied for 1st in a field of 16 in the pole vault, clearing 2.94 meters (9-7). Karlie Stauder was 4th at 2.79m (9-2). Karlie Stauder also placed 3rd in the 400m (1:03.40), beating 24 runners.

At Principia, 3 Rams placed 7th. Ram senior sprinter Kentrell Beck made the finals in the 60 meter dash (7.41) and finished 7th (7.38) in a field of 33. Senior Grant Mose was 7th in the shot put, throwing 12.65m (41-6) in a field of 27. Senior Cody Rohdemann was 7th in the 1600 meters run (4:59.67) in a field of 27.

At the fresh-soph level, the Rams made a splash. They placed 2nd in the 4x400m relay in a field of 9 teams. Carson Lockart, Drake Clark, Breyton Beck, and Ethan Rice went 4:00.68, beating the varsity time. In the fresh-soph 4x800m relay, Shelby was 4th in a field of 6. Phoenix Firnhaber, Lucas Stokes, Beck, and Griffin Schuricht ran 10:03.38.

Freshman Gage Smith staked a claim to the hurdles. He ran the fresh-soph 55 meter hurdles and placed 8th (13.62) to make the finals. In the finals he turned it up a notch and placed 6th (11.10). Sophomore Lucas Stokes placed 10th in the 1600 (5:27.30).

Freshman and sophomore boys led Shelby at Jacksonville, along with a senior. Senior Colton Miller placed 6th in the triple jump going 11.46m (37-7). He also was 10th in the long jump, leaping 5.60 meters (18-4.5).

Sophomore Max Beyers had the best individual finish, tying for 4th in the pole vault, scaling 3.65 meters (11-11.7). Phoenix Firnhaber placed 6th out of 57 in the 1600 meter run (4:54.89).

Freshman hurdler Gage Smith ran the varsity tilt and brought home 8th out of 30, running 10.22 in the finals and 9.54 in the prelims. Sophomore Ethan Rice was 12th in the prelims (9.54).

Senior Trenton Minnis had a Top 10 finish in the high jump, clearing 1.62m (5-3.7). Two Ram relays were Top 10. The 4x4 and 4x8 relays each finished 10th. The 4x400 relay of Drake Clark, Dax McNees, Gage Smith, Phoenix Firnhaber ran 4:01.20. The 4x800m Relay team of Beck, Stokes, Hilbert, and Miller ran 9:25.78.

Shelby ville and Okaw girls will run at the EIU Indoor Meet Saturday. Shelby boys will run the Rantoul Indoor Meet, Saturday, after Shelby and Okaw Valley run the Decatur Indoor Meet at Mt. Zion on Wednesday.
