Shelbyville Moulton softball (3-2) hosted Altamont on Monday, took a lead, fell behind then passed the Wildcats, 6-4.
Kinzee Musser battled Altamont’s ace Grace Nelson. Although Nelson blasted a home run off Musser, Musser struck out 10 batters and only gave up 3 hits, 2 walks and a hit batter. Nelson had 8 strikeouts and gave up 8 hits and 4 walks, with one hit batter.
Musser put Altamont down in order in the 1st. The first batter flew out to Haylie Hunter, then Musser rang up the next two batters.
Musser came to the plate and drew a walk. Emily Duckett reached on an error. Musser stole 3rd. With one out, Elyse Lape singled. Duckett stole 3rd and Claire Canada singled, 2-0. With two outs Hunter singled, but 3 runners were stranded by a K.
Musser rang up her 3rd and 4th batters in a row in the Altamont 2nd. After a single, she KO’d one more. Shelby went in order in the 2nd.
Altamont went in order in the 3rd. Musser KO’d her 6th victim, then Clark snagged a pop up at 2nd and Duckett a pop up at short. Canada reached on an error in the Ram 3rd, but was left on.
In the 4th, Musser gave up a walk, then Canada threw out a batter. Musser squeezed a pop up. A single and an error allowed two runs to score and tied the game, 2-2. Musser KO’d the 3rd out.
Addison Musser and Alex Jokisch hit back-to-back 1-out singles in the Ram 4th. A double play ended the at bat.
Altamont vaulted into the lead when Nelson blasted a 2-run home run, 4-2. After a pop up, Musser walked a batter and nelson homered. Another walk was followed by a K and a play made by Clark, 2nd to 1st.
Down by two in the 5th, Duckett led off with a single. Amber Lewis was hit by a pitch. With one out, Canada singled. Clark reached on an error and Shelby reclaimed the lead, 6-4. With two outs, Addie Musser walked, but was stranded.
In the 6th, Duckett threw out a batter, Canada caught a pop up and Musser threw her 9th K. Duckett and Lewis walked with two outs in the 6th, then a K stopped the chance.
In the 7th Altamont had to make hay. However, Musser rang up the first batter. Clark threw out the 2nd batter from 2nd. A fly ball to left ended the game the way it began.
Claire Canada led Shelbyville, going 2-for-3, reaching base all three times. She also reached on an error and scored a run. Duckett was 1-for-2, with a walk and reaching on an error. She scored twice.
Shelbyville (3-2) was rained out on Saturday against Meridian and on Tuesday to St. Anthony. They were to play at Teutopolis on Thursday and host Monticello for a doubleheader on Saturday.
