Shelbyville (19-11, 6-1 CIC) has turned a rebuilding year into a near 20-win volleyball season and near conference championship. They fell just short of both against the reigning 3rd place team in the state from last year, St. Teresa. St. Teresa came in and handed the Rams their first conference loss, 25-15, 25-16.

St. Teresa eliminated Windsor/Stew-Stras last year at 1A Sectional and went on to claim 3rd at 1A State (29-11).

“We knew tonight’s match was going to be a tough one,” said Ram coach Jamie Watson. “St. Teresa just came off a great win Tuesday night beating Mt. Zion in two sets and so they had the momentum going into this game. They have some great athletes and are able to run a much faster offense than we are used to seeing.”

Speed kills. Speed killed the Rams in a 2-quick, 2-set match. St. T out-scored the Rams 50 to 31 with almost consecutive double-digit drubbings, winning by 10 and 9 points.

St. Teresa had 9 hitters score kills and their percentage as a team was an unbelievable 60%. Four hitters were 100% and one 80%. Their offense set 28 of their 28 kills (100%). St. T blocked 11 Ram shots.

They racked up 5 aces for an amazing 44 attack points out of a total of 50 (88%). They handled the Ram attack with 35 digs.

“At times, I saw some great things on our side of the court, but not enough to keep us alive in this match,” Watson said. “My goal was to compete with St. Teresa and make the changes on the floor that we have talked about all season. I feel like we competed pretty well, but we are not making the adjustments that are needed and that we work on and talk about everyday.”

Shelbyville accomplished just 14 kills from 11 assists, just 68% out of the offensive set. The bright spot at the net was Madi Cisna. The junior had 8 swings an killed 5 of them (62.5%).

Star hitter Kyleigh Marty’s percentage wasn’t bad (38.5%). She just didn’t get enough chances. She was 5 of 13. Freshman Mia Wade killed 3 of 9 chances.

Chloe Watson managed just 7 assists and Kya McConnell had 4. Watson handled the ball just 32 times and had 3 errors. McConnell handled it 12 times with one error.

Shelby served zero aces and recorded just two blocks. They had just 16 attack points.

There were breakdowns defensively. The Rams net defense was not positive. They had 2 blocks and 9 block errors.

The Rams scooped 19 digs, but had almost as many errors (14). They successfully dug just 57% of their dig opportunities. Alexis Rohdemann led the team with 9 digs with 2 errors. The rest of the crew underachieved against the spray of Gatling gun fire.

Serve receive was better. They passed successfully out of receive 29 times with just 6 errors.

“This is what will stop us in post season play, if we can’t push to make those changes. It’s nice to see competition like this late in the season to help prepare for post season play and we should see more at this level this weekend at the Mt. Pulaski Tournament.”

Shelbyville varsity (19-11, 6-1 CIC) heads to the Mt. Pulaski Tourney on Saturday. Shelby (#4 sub-sectional seed) is the 2nd seed at regional and plays at the Robinson 2A Regional next week. They will probably play Robinson (#7) on Tuesday night and if they win they play the sub-sectional #1 seed Newton in the final on Thursdayy. Newton has beaten the Rams this year.

Shelbyville JV finished their season 12-3, 6-1 CIC. Shelby fresh-soph finished the season, 16-5, and conference champs (7-0 CIC).Thursday
