The Shelbyville Rams softball team took the first step into the postseason and used just enough power to sink #9 seed Sullivan in the Teutopolis Regional on Monday. Shelby used a glimpse of power to get the slim victory, 2-1.
The game was not a firework show of offense, except for the 4th inning. Each team had just 5 hits in 7 innings. Six of the 10 total hits came in the 4th inning. Shelby showed more power and that was the difference in the low-scoring affair.
Three Sullivan hits in the 4th were singles. Two of the three Ram hits in the 4th were for extra-bases. Ram fielding was also a factor, no errors.
Shelby had two hits and Sullivan one hit through 3 innings. In the 'Skin 4th, Ram ace Joselyn Lewis rang up the first batter, but then Sullivan hit three consecutive singles.
Alexis Britton singled and stole 2nd. Addison Darush singled Britton home for the lead, 1-0. Darush stole 2nd. Morgan Moll singled to left, but left fielder Allison Schuricht got the ball in and Darush couldn't score or the two teams might still be playing.
Moll went to 2nd on defensive indifference and they were in business still with just one one. Lewis threw a timely strikeout on a 3-2 pitch. The next batter lifted a ball to the outfield. In a season where fielding has been a struggle in the Ram outfield, Schuricht sure-handed the fly out and stopped the rally.
It was the Rams turn. After a fly out to center, Lewis took a 3-1 pitch to center for a home run. With one swing the game was tied again, 1-1. However, freshman Alexis Rohdemann jumped on a 2-0 pitch for a single to right.
The Natalie Frederick grounded out and moved Rohdemann to 2nd. With two outs, Kaytlin Tucker smacked a double to right, bringing Rohdemann around for what would be the winning run, 2-1.
Sullivan went in order in the 5th on plays by Jaylin McCabe at 3rd Rohdemann at short and a K from Lewis. Ali McCarter reached on a 2-out error for the Rams in the 5th but was left on.
Sullivan grounded out three times in the 6th, to Lewis at the circle, Mikayla Boehm at 1st and Lewis again. Rohdemann walked with 2 outs in the Ram 6th, but was stranded.
The Sullivan season or summer break came down to 3 outs in the 7th. Rohdemann squeezed a pop up for the first out. A grounder to McCarter at 2nd was the 2nd out. A last hurrah from Wallace was a single to center. Lewis rang up the last Mohican on 3 pitches.
Lewis threw 5 Ks with no walks. She had 1st pitch strikes to 17 of her 25 batters and threw just 87 pitches and 64 were strikes (73.6%). Wallace also gave up 5 hits with just one walk and one strikeout. She threw 14 first pitch strikes out of 24. She only threw 69 pitches and 47 were strikes (68.1%).
Six-seed Shelbyville (10-14) must play #1 Tuscola (29-2) on Tuesday in the semifinal. Shelbyville has lost two close game to Tuscola this year. They lost 3-0 and 2-1. In both games, Tuscola settled for scattering their 5 total runs through 14 innings to beat the Rams.
