Yesterday, in the Vandalia Holiday Tournament, Shelbyville lost their first game of the day to Wesclin, 56-50, despite some stellar play by Ladd, Nottingham, Schloz and Elam. Shelbyville was previously 1-0 for the tourney after defeating Flora on Monday, 56-53.

Kraig Ladd led the Rams with 14 points followed by Torry Schloz with 12 and all-purpose player, Jake Elam had 11. Jay Nottingham pulled down an impressive 14 rebounds and put in eight points in the effort against Wesclin.

Ladd opened up for the Rams with a trey followed by Jay Nottingham with a deuce. Wesclin took the lead at 9-5, but Jake Elam struck with a triple and Nottingham took the feed off Elam for an easy up. On the next play, Ladd dished off to Elam underneath for another two points and the Rams were ahead 12-9. Nottingham hit again but the Warriors countered with a trey. Ladd went the distance on a layup ending the first period with the Rams in the lead, 16-12.

But the Warriors came out with a different team in the second period, pounding the backboard for 17 points. Shelbyville tossed in nine. Jake Elam hit again for two, and Schloz added a bucket. Ladd was questionably called for traveling three times, resulting in three hand-overs to the Warriors. But the Rams kept pace after an Elam to Isaac Smith feed, and the Rams went into halftime trailing by only five, 25-30.

Wesclin held onto their five-point margin for awhile. in the third. Elam hit for two again to keep it at 30-35, but the Warriors started to open things up, hitting treys and spreading the defense. Elam took one all the way in for a layup to get the Rams to 32-40. Schloz also went in for the hoop, and Nottingham fed to Ladd underneath for the layup. Schloz took a steal all the way to the bank and at the end of three period, the Rams were still behind by the five-point spread, 42-47.

Wesclin ran up a 10 point lead, midway in the fourth. Schloz closed the gap with two more and Ladd scored underneath. Nottingham did the assist for Ladd to get the Rams up to 48-54 with less than a minute left in the game.

Ladd took one in all the way for another basket but the Rams were left short at the buzzer, 50-56.

The Rams fell to 1-1 in the tournament having defeated Flora in a game on Monday, 56-53.
