The Shelbyville Ram girls basketball team was in the midst of a comeback when the buzzer sounded ending their season on Monday night at the Sullivan 2A Regional. Shelby (12-18), the 10th seed, challenged, but lost to Marshall (18-9) the 7th seed, 34-31.

It was a physical game that limited offense, but the Shelbyville Rams came out ion the 1st period and took a lead. Freshman forward Abigail Kaiser jump-started the Rams scoring three times for all 6 of her points early.

Sophomore Trinity Wade was sent to the line, no free shots. She made 1-of-2 free throws, then made 2-of-2. Shelby was up 7-6 and matched Marshall scoring two more times from the floor to the end of the quarter. Freshman Mia Wade had a deuce.

Marshall, likewise, had a post player score three times in the 1st, Rachael Goekler. Ally Compton and Adi Scott added solo twos to trail, 11-10.

Marshall strapped on their battle gear in the 2nd and went on an 11-4 run. Nolee Sollars hit a 3 and Kai Engledow popped a trey. Compton made 1-of-2 foul shots and a deuce. Scott missed two foul shots and made a deuce.

Trinity Wade and Mia Wade had the solo Rams buckets, lost the lead and trailed by 6 at the half, 21-15. That run and less than perfect foul shooting on both sides was a factor in the final score.

After the break, Shelby matched Marshall during another physical quarter, 6-6. Mia Wade scored twice and senior Carson Beyers scored once for Shelby. Sollars, Compton, and Scott had solo buckets for Marshall.

The 4th period still had Marshall up 6, 27-21. Shelby still had the scent in crunch time. The Rams denied Marshall any field goals in the final 8:00. They put them at the line and Marshall was inconsistent.

Marshall shot 13 free throws in the 4th and made 7. Compton was 3-of-6, Scott was 2-of-3, Sollars was 0-for-2. Goekler was 2-of-2. They were held to just 7 points with the game on the line.

Shelbyville put on a final 10-7 run. Mia wade dialed in from long distance and had a deuce. Trinity Wade had a two. Beyers got to the line for 1-of-2, scored a deuce and got to the line once more, but didn’t convert. Shelby ended 3-points shy of advancing.

Marshall won by 3 points, but missed 10 free throws (8-of-18), shooting 44%. Shelby lost by 3 and missed 6 free throws (4-of-10), shooting 40%.

Marshall had one, almost three players in double figures. Compton finished with 10 points on 3 buckets and 4-of-9 at the line. Scott had 8 on 3 buckets and 2-of-5 foul shooting. Goekler had 8, three scores early and two late free throws.

Shelbyville had no one in double figures, as they stair-stepped. Mia Wade led with 9 points on 4 buckets (1-3). Trinity Wade had 7 points (3/4 FTs) and Kaiser had 6 points early. Beyers had 5 and Sophie Ogden 4.

Shelbyville made 13 field goals with one 3 for 27 points. Marshall made 12 field goals with 2 treys for 26 points, a 1-point Shelby edge. But Marshall made 8-of-18 free throws and Shelby 4-of-10, a 4-point Marshall edge.

Marshall (18-9) has the privilege of playing #1 seed Paris (31-0) in the semifinal on Wednesday at 6 p.m. Shelbyville finished 12-18.
