The Vandalia Holiday Boys Basketball Tournament is a gauntlet that rarely goes as planned. Today in the first round, Shelbyville (1-5), which won their first game of the year and then went on a 5-game losing streak, got a win, while undefeated Stew-Stras (5-0) lost.

Shelbyville held off host Vandalia at the wire, 52-51. Stew-Stras got behind in the second period and lost to another NTC opponent, Altamont, 65-58. Shelbyville is currently playing Trenton Wesclin in the second round of pool play and Stew-Stras will play Vandalia at 6:30 p.m. tonight.

Shelbyville was once again paced by frenetic 6-5 guard Cody Boarman. He had a game-high 20 points with six rebounds. He launched a sortie of 3s again, making 1-of-6. He also continued to take the ball to the rim and get to the line making 7-of-11.

The 4-year point guard, caine Cloe, directed the Rams again and was the only other Ram in double figures, scoring 10 points, all from the floor, shooting over 50%. The rest of the Ram crew had balanced sub-double-digit scoring. Austin Smith had six, Cody Langan four, Levi Pruemer four, Dustyn Fatheree four and Jake Keown four.

Vandalia was paced by Cowger and Johnson with 17 and 16 points, respectively. Ritchy was also in double figures (10 points). However, they only had two other players score with six and two points.

Stew-Stras beat Shelbyville prior to the tournament by a bunch. They also beat Windsor in the season-opening Comet Hatchet game by 20. Windsor then upset Altamont in Windsor in OT. Despite that, Altamont, coming off a blowout of Cowden-Herrick, had the Comets number. The number was 17-of-22 free throw shooting, a 13-point advantage at the line in a 7-point game.

Stew-Stras was woefully off from the arc, a trademark of their team. They were only 2-of-14 in 3-pointers, while Vandalia was 4-of-12, led by McGinnis with a trey hat trick. The Comets out-rebounded Altamont 36 to 18, but they were only able to make 24 field goals and get to the line four times, despite the second chance points.

The key was free throws. The Indians shot 77 percent on 17-of-22. The Comets were just 4-of-8.
