Shelbyville Ram 7th grade volleyball (13-10) made a big push at the end of the 2020 season, winning 7 of the last 9 matches, before bowing to the undisputed #1 seed and Regional Champion Meridian.

Ram 7th went 1-2 at their own tourney. They then, at 6-7, turned things around. They beat Stew-Stras, 25-4, 25-19. They beat Teutopolis, 25-20, 25-5.

They won 2 of 3 matches at the conference tourney, beating, 25-23, 25-18, then lost to the #1 seed Meridian in 3, 10-25, 25-20, 14-25. They knocked off Warrensburg in the 3rd place game, 25-20, 25-17.

Shelbyville was 10-8 heading down the home stretch of the season. They beat Sullivan, 25-16, 25-13, then beat Maroa, 22-25, 25-15, 25-15. Shelby had won 6-1 before playing Pana in a make-up match. They lost that one, 16-25, 25-12, 22-25.

Still heading into regional, Shelby (12-9) had won 6 of the last 8 matches. In the first round, they beat Teutopolis again in a #4/#5 upset, 25-10, 25-12. Shelby had won 7 of 9 matches.

In the regional semifinal they had to play #1 Meridian, again. They had lost to them in 3 sets, 10-25, 25-20, 14-25, in the conference tourney semifinal. In the regional semifinal, they challenged Meridian, before bowing out, 25-22, 17-25, 15-25.

“The 1st game of this match was the best they’ve ever played,” said Ram 7th coach Maggie Keown. “Every girl played an important role and improved, so much. They have a very bright future.”

The Shelby 7th served 271 aces, hit 367 kills, and 15 blocks for 653 attack points out of 1142 points served (57.1%). They served 271 aces out of 1142 points (23.9%).

They dished 274 assists towards 367 kills, getting 74.7% from the set offense. The Rams scooped 451 digs.

Jaycee Brinkoetter led the Rams in 5 of the 6 statistical categories. She served 299 points with 118 aces (39.4%). She hit 112 kills had 2 blocks, for 142 attack points. She dished 148 assists to give her a hand in 290 attack points. She also led with 108 digs.

Maisie Kull served 199 points with 48 aces. She also hit 97 kills with 5 blocks for 150 attack points. Marley Phelps served a team 2nd 224 points with 38 aces and hit 33 kills for 71 attack points.

Mischa Beals served 139 points with 21 aces and 43 kills for 64 attack points. Kylie Gordon served 46 points with 10 aces and 46 kills, with a team-high 7 blocks for 63 attack points. Sophia Lynch served 106 points with 19 aces and 22 kills for 41 attack points. Katie Nohren served 111 points with 14 aces.

Following Brinkoetter in digs was Phelps with 87, Kull with 84, Beals with 50, and Briley Schutt with 40.
