Shelby County Jr. Legion baseball hosted the Central Illinois Titans on Tuesday night and swept them out of Shelbyville to go to 3-1 on the young season, winning 14-0, and, 6-3.

Shelby County has Shelbyville, Okaw Valley, and Windsor/Stew-Stras players on their squad this year and even a cadre of Christian County players from Pana. The mix of underclassmen is gelling. They lost their first game, but have since won 3 straight.

On Tuesday against the Titans, Shelby primed the pump early then the dam burst in the 3rd inning of game 1.

After Shelby starter Seth Robertson (Shelbyville) rang up the first 3 batters he faced, Bryce Bieber (Pana) hit a lead-off single. He stole 2nd with one out and went to 3rd, when Hunter Reed (Shelbyville) made it to 1st on a dropped 3rd strike and a throwing error. Robertson grounded out, but Bieber scored, 1-0.

Payton Bryant caught a fly ball in center in the Titan 2nd, then Robertson gave up a walk on a 3-2 pitch. He answered with a K. A ground ball to Reed at 3rd was thrown to 1st to bring Shelby back to the plate.

Bo Christer (Pana) ;led off the Shelby 2nd with a double in the gap in left-center. Brayden Gritzmacher then beat out an bobbled grounder at 1st. Bryant forced Gritzmacher at 2nd on a grounder.

The pitcher hit Max Doris (Okaw Valley) to load the bases. Brendan Schoonover (Pana) was then clipped by a pitch to force in a run. Nick Nohren (Shelbyville) then slapped a single, driving in 2 runs, 3-0.

Robertson rang up two more batters in the 3rd and Reed throw out another batter on a grounder, 3rd to 1st.

The crack in the dam gave way in the Shelby 3rd. Gannon Beals (Shelbyville) led off with a single and stole 2nd. Reed was hit by a pitch and stole 2nd. Robertson walked to load the bases. Sam Vonderheide (WSS) stroked a 3-run single, clearing the bases, 7-0.

With one out, Gritzmacher singled and ended up at 2nd with Vonderheide at 3rd. Bryant was hit by a pitch to load the bases again. Vonderheide scored on a wild pitch, 8-0. Doris walked and forced in a run. Schoonover walked and Nohren hit his second single in a row, driving in a run, 10-0.

Parker Dixon (Shelbyville) walked forcing in a run, 11-0. Bieber singled in a run, 12-0. Beals batted around driving in 2 runs, 14-0.

The Titans got a last up. Robertson KO'd the first batter and threw out the 2nd on a ground ball. He added injury to insult by hitting the next batter, then rang up the last man for the win.

Game 2 wasn't a Shelby blowout. In fact, Shelby had to make a steady comeback to offset a strong Titan 1st. 

The first batter was awarded 1st on catcher interference. Starter Hunter Reed then threw a K. Three consecutive singles and an error on the final one, allowed 3 runs to score. Reed threw another K and a ground out to Schoonover, short to 1st got Shelby off the hook.

Shelby got two runs back quickly. Sam Voonderheide led off with a single, but then was forced out by Beals at 2nd. Reed singled and stole 2nd. Robertson doubled two runs in, 3-2.

In the 2nd, Vonderheide caught a fly in center, Doris made a play, 3rd to 1st and Reed KO'd a batter. Shelby passed up the Titans in the 2nd.

Doris led off with a double. Bryant singled and an error on the play allowed the run to tie, 3-3.With two outs, Schoonover walked and stole 2nd. Dixon reached on an error and two runs scored, 5-3.

In the Titan 3rd, Reed threw a K, then threw out a batter. Dixon caught a fly in right. Shelby added a run in the 3rd. Reed was hit by a pitch with one out. He stole 2nd and went to 3rd on a ground out. The pitcher balked and Reed got home, 6-3.

 In the Titan 4th, Reed threw a K and caught a pop up. Tran singled to left, but Robertson threw him out going for 2nd as Beals made the tag to end the inning. Bot team went 3 up, 3 down in the 5th.

Last Saturday, Shelby Jr. Legion got their season started, but met a buzz-saw in the Mid-State Force 15U, with a couple of SHS teammates, 13-1.

Shelby County drew 1st blood, but that was all they got. Wit one out, Beals walked and went to 2nd and 3rd on passed balls. Reed singled him across. The Force got that run right back. 

Henschen walked with one out and Jack Allen was hit. Henschen scored on a passed ball, 1-1. Shelby starter Parker Dixon rang up the next two batters. Schoonover singled with 2 outs in the Shelby 2nd, but was stranded. Shelby put the Force down in order in the 2nd with another Dixon K.

Dixon walked in the Shelby 3rd, but was forced out, then the Force launched their first 6-run rally of the game.

A 1-out walked primed the pump. Alex Hawkins (Shelbyville) then walked. With two outs and two on, a double gave Force the lead, 3-1. Henschen was hit and Jack Allen tripled in 2, 5-1. A hit batter was followed by an Ethan Clark (Shelbyville) 2-run single, 7-1. Gritzmacher came in to pitch and threw a K for the 3rd out.

Reed walked for Shelby with two outs in the 4th, but was stranded. Sam Vonderheide reached on an error in the 5th, but was left on. Gritzmacher threw a K in the Force 5th. In the Shelby 6th, Doris doubled again, with one out, but was left on base.

In the Force 6th, Clark doubled 2 runs across with one out. A 2-out single drove in two, 11-1. Hawkins singled off reliever Christer, driving in 2 runs for the walk-off, 13-1 sudden death.

Shelby County righeted their ship right away on Saturday by beating Okaw Valley in game 2. All they needed was a 4-run rally in the 1st to get the job done.

Reed threw that game and recorded 3 Ks in the 1st inning, while giving up a single. 

With one out in the Shelby 1st, Gannon Beals singled. Reed singled and Robertson walked to load the bases. After an infield a fly, Christer singled a run home. Gritzmacher then launched a bases-loaded triple, 4-0.

Tyson Montgomery singled in the Okaw valley 2nd and Cale Roley walked, but then were stranded. Vonderheide singled and Doris doubled in the Shelby 2nd, but three Ks stymied more scores.

Reed gave up a lead-off triple in the Okaw 3rd to Wheeler. However, he was out trying to steal home. Shelby got the bases loaded in the 3rd. Bieber led off with a single. With one out, Reed and Robertson walked, but were left on.

Okaw got a 1-out double in the 4th and Montgomery reached on a 2-out error, but they were stranded. Gritzmacher led off the Shelby 4th with a double. and Doris walked with two outs, but a ground out ended that chance. Reed threw a K in the Okaw 5th.

Parker Dixon reached on a dropped 3rd strike in the Shelby 5th. Nohren forced him out. Nohren got to 2nd on an error and Bieber walked to no avail. Okaw got a walk and a single in the 6th that went nowhere.

Robertson walked in the Shelby 6th and Bryant singled for naught. Okaw's last chance fell flat on two ground outs and a fly out. Reed got the complete game, 7-inning win.
