The Shelbyville girls basketball team had quickness and defense and scored almost 50 points to open the season as they went to Okaw Valley on Monday and won by 20, 49-29.

The Ram artillery softened up the Okaw ramparts in the 1st period. Shelby had four buckets and they were all 3s.

Sophomore guard Trinity Wade sank a pair of treys. Holly Metzger also had two treys, bookending a trip to the line, making 1-of-2. Freshman starter Mia Wade drove and got to the line twice. She made 1-of-4 shots. Carson Beyers had one free throw and missed.

Okaw also scored four times from the floor, but only one was a 3-pointer. Mia Harris sank the long ball and guard Bailey Bennett made a pair of twos. Center Kate Jeffers had a deuce, but Okaw trailed by 5 after one, 14-9.

In the 2nd frame, the rams charged ahead with a 17-8 run. T Wade was off the hook. She scored five times and split a pair at the line for 11 points in the quarter and 17 points in the first half. Mia Wade scored, Metzger scored and Beyers scored.

Okaw got four of their eight points from Jeffers on two buckets. Shyanne Harding scored from the floor, while Avery Bruns and Delaney Johnson both had 1-of-2 trips to the line, falling behind by 14 points at the break, 31-17.

The Ram barrage continued in the 3rd period, while Okaw struggled to score. Shelby added a 14-5 run. Beyers scored twice and Mia Wade splashed a deuce and a trey. Metzger made a two and 1-of-2 foul shots.

Okaw guards Miaya Lehman and Mia Harris had the only Timberwolf buckets in the 3rd. Bennett made 1-of-2 free throws as they fell behind by 23 points, 45-22.

The rams called off the dogs in the 4th and Okaw trimmed the final deficit by a few points, 7-4. Lexie Bartimus buried an Okaw 3 and Evelyn Ashley had a bucket. Jeffers scored from the floor once more. Kelsey Litton scored for Shelby and Mia Wade capped her debut with another two.

Shelbyville had three players in double figures and Okaw had none. Trinity wade led everyone with 19 points over 3 quarters. She scored eight times from the floor, including two treys, plus a throw.

Metzger had a dozen points with a pair of deuces and a pair of treys, plus 2-of-4 at the line. Mia Wade opened her varsity career in double figures. She scored 10 on 4 baskets, including a trey, and a throw.

Kate Jeffers led Okaw Valley with 8 points, all from the floor. Harris (1-3) and Bennett followed with 5 points, each.
