Shelby County Senior Legion baseball (1-0) started off their 2019 season with a walk-off win on Sunday, beating Decatur Pride in the bottom of the 9th, 9-8.
The game came down the the final 3 outs, check that 2 outs. With one dead, Camden Coleman (Okaw Valley) fouled a pitch off his toe. He got back in the batter's box and finished working a walk. He got to 1st and the next batter lifted a fly ball to center. Coleman went halfway to 2nd, but on the catch had to get back to 1st.
On a following strike pitch to Trenton Moore (Neoga), the catcher tried to throw down to 1st and pick off Coleman, mistake. The ball sailed over the 1st baseman's head and Coleman, even on a sore toe, beat the throw to 2nd base.
With two outs and the winning run at 2nd, Moore laced a base hit just over the outstretched glove of a leaping 2nd baseman. Coleman rounded 3rd and went for home. He strode across the finish line and scored the winning run on Moore's walk-off single.
It was a see-saw battle. The Pride went up 2-0, 2-1, then 3-1. Shelby claimed a 4-3 lead, then the Pride tied, 4-4. They went back up 6-4 and Shelby made it 6-5. Decatur led 7-5, before Shelby had another rally to claim the lead, 8-7. The Pride tied again in the top of the 9th, but Shelby got the walk-off win.
Decatur out-hit Shelby 13 to 10, but Shelby drew 9 walks to the pride's 3, advantage Shelby. Shelby pitchers combined for 11 K and the Pride 10. Both teams had 2 errors each, but out of the 17 runs scored, 11 were earned.
Camden Coleman started the game for Shelby County. After a ground out to Dalton McGill (Okaw Valley) at short, Coleman hit a batter. He responded with a K and then pluncked another batter. A passed ball let a run in and an error and a wild pitch another, 2-0. After another walk to put two men in scoring position, Coleman rang up the 3rd out.
In the Shelby 1st, the pride rang up the first two batters, but Colten Reed (Shelbyville) smacked a double. Aaron Kirby (WSS) followed with an RBI single. Coleman walked and stole 2nd, but was left on base, 2-1.
Another hit batter gave Decatur a man on in the 2nd. He stole 2nd. Coleman threw a K, then gave up an RBI- double, 3-1. Hunter Reed (Shelbyville) walked with two outs in the Shelby 2nd, but was left on.
In the Pride 3rd, Shelby went in order despite a 1-out single. The runner on 1st was caught stealing as McGill made the tag.
McGill led off the Shelby 3rd with a walk. He went to 2nd on a passed ball and Rece Pullen (Shelbyville) walked and stole 2nd. Colten Reed singled both runners home for the tie with no outs, 3-3.
After a strikeout, Coleman and Stokes both walked to load the bases. Moore lifted a sac fly to center. Reed tagged up and score for the lead, 4-3.
The first batter of the Pride 4th walked and was sacrificed to 2nd. Coleman threw a K, but a single tied the game, 4-4. A ground ball to Trey Ruot (Shelbyville), 2nd to 1st ended the at bat.
Hunter Reed singled in the Shelby 4th, but was forced out. Payton Bryant (Shelbyville) then stole 2nd and 3rd. Two more Ks brought on the 5th.
The Pride started off the 5th with a single and an error. Another single and a double made it 6-4. Coleman came back with a K. A fly ball to right and then to left ended the rally. Kirby and Stokes walked in the Shelby 5th, but they were stranded.
Moore came on in relief in the 6th. He threw a K, then a 3-unassisted play followed. A double threatened, but a grounder to short ended the threat. Shelby's Hunter Reed was hit with one out in the 6th. A passed ball and an error drove in a run, 6-5.
The Pride got that run back with two outs in the 7th on a home run, 7-5. Shelby couldn't respond, save a lead-off single by Colten Reed. After a Moore K and a single in the pride 8th, Shelby turned a double-play. A ground ball to McGill at shortstop with a force at 2nd and a throw to 1st.
In the Shelby 8th, another 3-run rally boosted a Shelby lead. With one out, Ruot launched a double. Hunter Reed traded places with his own double. After a foul out, McGill smacked the 3rd double of the inning, driving in the tying run, 7-7. Pullen singled McGill home for the lead, 8-7.
The pride looked for their own rally in the top of the 9th. Three consecutive singles, the last a bunt, jammed the bases. A fly ball to left was caught then, Bryant threw to 3rd to double the runner up.
Nevertheless, another single drove a run home for the tie, 8-8. A walk loaded the bases again, but Moore threw a K to send the game to the bottom of the 9th tied.
INcoming senior ace Colten Reed led Shelby going 3-for-5 with a double, 2 runs and 2 RBIs. His brother, incoming junior Hunter Reed, was 2-for-2 with a double, a walk, 2 runs and an RBI. Of the 10 Shelby hits, 4 were doubles, three in one inning.
