Shelbyville 7th grade volleyball (#5) challenged the #1 seeded Meridian hawks on Monday night in the Meridian 7-3A Regional semifinal, but lost in the 3-set match, 25-22, 17-25, 15-25.
The #5 seed gave Meridian more than they could handle right out of the box. Then the weight of the seed set in. Meridian out-scored Shelby by 15, 72 to 57.
“It wasn’t the outcome that we wanted, but these girls have a lot to be proud of,” said Ram 7th coach Maggie Keown. “The 1st game of this match was the best they’ve ever played.”
Nevertheless, the Rams served 11 aces, 22 kills, 3 blocks for 36 attack points out 57 (63%), a much higher attack point percentage than their season average. Their only attack point percentage that was higher was in their win against Sullivan.
Jaycee Brinkoetter led the Rams in the finale with a team-high 14 points with 5 aces, 7 kills for 12 attack points. She also dished a team-high 11 assist to give her a piece of 23 attack points.
Maisie Kull served 8 points with 2 aces and a team-high 8 kills, plus a block for 11 attack points. Kylie Gordon had 4 kills and a team-high 2 blocks for 6 attack points.
Mischa Beals served 8 points with an ace and 2 kills. Her 4 assists gave her part of 7 attack points. Katie Nohren served double-digit points, again, 10 points with 2 aces.
The defense was also led by Brinkoetter who scooped a season-high 16 digs, giving her a triple-double (points, assists, digs). Marley Phelps followed with 8 digs. The team totaled 38 digs in their battle against the #1.
“Every girl played an important role and improved, so much,” Coach Keown said. “They have a very bright future.”
