The Shelbyville 7th grade volleyball team (#5) broke the seeding at the Meridian 7-3A Regional on Saturday and upset the #4 seed, Teutopolis in the 1st round, 25-10, 25-12.
The seeding was probably off, because the Rams had beaten Teutopolis in their only meeting, a week ago, 25-20, 25-5. This time the Rams were most consistently in charge, winning both sets by double-digits.
“i’m very proud of hos the girls played together,” said Ram 7th coach Maggie Keown. “We did a great job serving and playing our game. We will play Meridian for the third time on Monday. We will work to adjust our defense based on their hitters and play a whole match with fire and determination.”
Shelby won by 28 points, 50 to 22. They served 15 aces and struck 11 kills and a block for 27 attack points out of 50 (54%).
Jaycee brinkoetter served a team-high 15 points and a team-high 5 aces, 2 kills and a block for 8 attack points. She also dished a team-high 6 assists to be part of 14 attack points.
Maisie Kull and Mischa Beals were the net threats with 4 and 3 kills, respectively. Kull added 8 points with 3 aces for 7 attack points. Sophia Lynch served 9 points with a team-high 5 aces and a kill for 6 attack points.
Brinkoetter also led the defense with 7 digs. The team scooped 15 digs, total, and dished 10 assists towards the 11 kills (90%). Katie Nohren continued to serve in double figures, recording 11 points and 2 aces.
Shelby 7th (13-9, 6-2 Okaw) must play the #1 seed, Meridian, at the Meridian 7-3A Regional on Monday at 6 p.m. Shelby lost to Meridian in the conference tourney in 3 sets, 10-25, 25-20, 14-25.
