The Shelbyville 7th grade girls basketball team has struggled to get a win this year. They got another win, this time on Saturday over Clinton, 19-16. Shelby 8th also won for the sweep, 35-30.

Shelby 7th had not won since beating Okaw Valley by two points 3 weeks ago. That was also a sweep as the 8th grade eked out a 1-point win. 

Home cookin' in the 4th quarter got wins for both Shelby squads. The 7th grade was locked in a 2-point game until the final frame. A 10-6 run, tipped the scales in their favor.

In the prime-time game, Shelby was down 6 to start the 4th and put on a 15-4 run to pass Clinton for the win.

Shelby 7th led after the 1st, 5-4. Kenzie Jones started early with 4 of her game-high 10 points on two scores. Alex Jokisch split a pair of free throws for the margin. Clinton got two solo buckets.

Clinton claimed the lead at half with a 4-1 2nd period. Marley Phelps had the only Ram bucket and they missed 3 free throws. Clinton got two more solo buckets and also missed 3 foul shots, leading by 1 at the break, 8-7.

Both clubs had one bucket, each in 6:00 of the 3rd. McKinley Hippard scored for the rams. It came down to the 4th quarter.

Clinton shot 10 free throws in the 4th and made 4. Shelby shot 8 and made 2. Clinton made one basket.

Shelby got two free throws and 2 baskets from Jones for 6 points in 6:00. Hippard and Phelps added solo buckets and the margin of victory, 19-16.

Jones had 4 baskets and 2-of-4 at the line to lead the Rams. Clinton had two players with 6 points, each.

In the 8th grade game, Clinton ran out to a5-point lead early on an 11-6 run. Gabby Golding scored twice for Shelby and 7th grader Adison Musser, who didn't score in the prelim, scored once. The Rams missed two foul shots.

The Maroons got two buckets from Koeppel a triple from Humble, a two from Koritz and two free throws from Armstrong.

Clinton followed with an 8-3 run in the 2nd. Kinzee Musser had all 3 Ram points on 1-of-2 foul shooting and a basket. Clinton had four players score on two solo 2s, a 3 by Arnstrong and 1-of-4 free throws. They built a 10-point lead at the break, 19-9.

Shelby had a mountain to climb. They started climbing in the 3rd with an 11-7 run. Jaycee Brinkoetter (7th), who didn't score in the prelim, knocked down a 3. Kinzee Musser scored twice. Dru Clark scored. Golding got to the line three times for 6 shots and made two.

Humble had a 3-point play for Clinton in the 3rd. Koeppel and Filkin had solo twos, to hold on to a 6-point lead going to the 4th, 26-20.

The Rams exploded with a 15-4 run in he final 6:00. Kinzee Musser scored 3 times from the floor. She shot 5 free throws and made 3 for 9 points in crunch time. Dru Clark scored twice and Millie Clark got on the board with a two.

Clinton was dwarfed late by 11 points. Filkin scored twice and that was it. They only had 3 free throws and missed all three. Shelby had 7 free throws, making 3.

Kinzee Musser was the leading scorer with 16 points on 6 baskets and 4-of-7 foul shooting. She had 13 points in the 2nd half, 9 in the 4th. Golding and Dru Clark followed with 6 points, each.

Clinton had no one in double figures. Humble led with 8, including a 3. Koeppel had 6 after 4 in the 1st,. Filkin had 6 all in the 2nd half. Armstrong had the other Maroon 3.

Shelbyville basketball was scheduled to play at Maroa on Monday and at Nokomis on Tuesday. Conference tournaments start Saturday.
