The Shelbyville volleyball program swept through Meridian on Thursday night. The Ram varsity won, 25-12, 25-10. The JV won 25-10, 25-17. The fresh-soph won, 25-10, 25-15.

“I never really know what to think coming into these matches,” said Ram coach Jamie Watson. “I hope the team that has been rolling these past couple of weeks will come out and take care of business, but there is always that little thought of will the “other” Shelbyville team come to play tonight.

The ‘Rolling Rams” showed up Thursday. They doubled-up Meridian, out-scoring them 50 to 22. They program doubled-up the Hawks, out-scoring them, 150 to 74.

“Fortunately, we haven’t seen the “other” Shelbyville team for a while and hopefully we wont see them again this year. I told the girls tonight to be sure to come out and not overlook Meridian. Sometimes when you begin winning several in a row, you can have a tendency to start overlooking teams that are rebuilding and I definitely didn’t want to do that.”

Shelbyville didn’t overlook anything at Macon. They hit 24 kills and served 9 aces in the too-quick, 2-set match for 33 attack points (66%). They were led by killers Kyleigh Marty and Kynlee Summers. Marty hit 10 kills out of 27 shots (37%) and Summers served up 5 aces with 5 kills out of 11 tries (45.5%), both scoring 10 attack points, each. Madi Cisna added 5 kills out of 11 shot (45.5%).

Summers was the overall player of the match, serving an incredible 20 points with her 5 kills (25%). Kya McConnell served 11 points with 2 more aces.

Chloe Watson dished 22 of the 23 assists. They got all but one kill out of their offense. The defense provided 34 digs to deny Meridian kills. Summers and libero Lexie Rohdemann led the defense. Summers had 9 digs (no errors) and Rohdemann 8 digs (1 error), respectively. Mia Wade had 6 and Kya McConnell 5 (1 error). Rohdemann had 7 serve receives (0 errors) and Wade received 6.

“We came out fired up and was able to keep that fire for two straight sets to pull out a match win fairly easy,” Watson said. “I have two freshman on my floor that really add a lot to the team. I know they both get frustrated with themselves, but they are freshman and that is what I tell them. One brings excited, communication and wisdom to the floor and is beginning to get in and put a ball to the floor.”

Mallory Holland hit 3 kills in 8 swings (37.5%)on Thursday and 1 dig.

“The other freshman is an all around awesome player,” Watson said. “Yes, there are some things that she will improve on, but she is one of our best passers, defensive players and servers. Offensively, she hasn’t quite gotten the hang of putting the ball to the floor every swing, but she will soon. She does keep the ball in play.”

Mia Wade served 7 points with an ace, hit a kill and scooped 6 digs and received 6 serves.

“Most importantly for these two players are they are team players, who encourage everyone on the floor and they are not afraid to play defense against a varsity team.”

Shelbyville varsity (13-7, 4-0 CIC) and JV (8-2, 4-0 CIC) host Pawnee on Tuesday and fresh-soph (10-2, 4-0 CIC) play next Thursday, hosting Clinton with the varsity/JV.
