A lone Shelbyville Ram qualified for the IHSA Class A State Track meet next week, by qualifying at the Sullivan 1A Sectional on Thursday, Max Beyers.

Freshman Max Beyers cleared a personal best, 12 feet 3 inches, in the pole vault to make the cut for State.

"Max qualified by making the qualifying height of 12'3" on his last attempt to advance," said Ram coach Kevin Kramer. "I am very happy for Max. He is a great kid from a great family. He works very hard managing his time dual sporting with baseball and track. He puts solid time in and accepts help from everyone including his dad, club coaches, myself, coach Mosley, coaches from other schools and other athletes themselves.
"Pole vaulters are a great fraternity of athletes. They all want to help each other succeed. The key to being a good vaulter is listening and adapting to changes. The only way you get better is getting on bigger poles. Max was able to do that at sectionals. In fact, he got on his biggest pole yet and had some great attempts at 12'9".  A PR for a freshman at state will be a good goal for Max next week."

Pana boys won the sectional meet and other Shelby Area athletes from Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City, and Sullivan qualified for State.

Senior Dylan Webster (CHBC) is headed back to State, but not in the pole vault this time. He focused on the long jump and triple jump. He won the sectional long jump to qualify (21-4.5) and was 2nd in the triple jump (43-1.25) to qualify. Teammate, freshman Jadon Robertson won the 110 hurdles in a time of 16.06 to qualify.

Senior Jadon Nuzzo of Sullivan qualified again for State in the pole vault, winning the sectional title (15-0).

"The rest of the sectional was very good for the Rams," Coach Kramer said. "Although nobody else advanced, the Rams had several personal bests from the young squad. I am very happy on how we progressed this year. We had some adversity early in the year and they responded well.
"There is a huge difference between the size of a junior and senior compared to most freshman and sophomores. Our kids have set the table for success in the future. I look forward to watching them progress and the Rams will be back competing for sectional titles very soon. The Rams had won six of the last eight sectionals."

Coach Kramer is retiring this year and has been the constant in all the Ram success over the years in cross country and in track.

"I want to thank everyone associated with our program, especially coaches Tyler Pierce, Jason Palmer, Chris Mosley, Tim McElroy and Paul Conlon," Kramer said. "They are all outstanding in their areas of expertise and make the total junior high/senior high girls and boys programs a success. Year in and year out, we usually are exceptional at all levels. I don't see that changing any time soon. It has been an honor for me to coach all of these years and I look forward to watching the Rams in the future."
