The St. Teresa Bulldogs surprised the Shelbyville Rams on Saturday in the CIC Tourney and stuck a feather in their cap. They were a handful of points better than the Rams in each of the first 3 quarters and went on to win by 13 points, 61-48.
They held the Rams down in the 1st period, 17-12, then 14-9 in the 2nd period.
Fitzpatrick scored 3 times to start the game and the Bulldogs also got a trio of solo treys from Danner, Stoner, and Schmidt. Hogan added a two. The Rams were led by Malcolm Miller with three baskets, one was converted into a 3-point play for 7 points. Leo Logue made a triple and Payton Bryant a deuce.
Shelby was down by 5 to start the 2nd. Miller carried the Rams again with a trey and a pair of deuces for 7 points. Mason Miller had the only other Ram bucket.
St. T got a 3 from Hogan and 1-of-2 free throws. Fitzpatrick had a two and two free throws. Schmidt made a two and 1-of-2 free throws.
The 3rd period, the Bulldogs kept up the pressure with a 16-11 run. Fitzpatrick continued to give Shelby problems with two scores. Hogan scored and then made two free throws. Schmidt scored and made 1-of-2 foul shots.
Braden Nichols led the Rams in the 3rd with a pair of triples. Miller made one bucket and 3-of-4 free throws to trail by 15.
The Rams finally wriggled off the hook in the 4th quarter and out-scored the Dawgs, by a bucket. Malcolm Miller got loose for 11 points. He scored twice inside the arc, splashed a 3 and then another 2. He also made two free throws. Logue made another 3-pointer and Mason Miller scored again.
It wasn't enough and the Rams took a rare loss. They almost matched the Rams with 14 points to secure the upset. They had just two buckets, a trey from Hogan and a two from Fitzpatrick.
St. T then iced the game at the line. Fitzpatrick made 3-of-3 free throws. Hogan made 2-of-4. Stoner made both foul shots. Schmidt made two free throws.
The Rams and the Dawgs shot about even from the floor. St. T made 19 field goals with 8 treys for 46 points. They got more points from the arc (24) than from 2-point range (22). Shelby made 18 field goals with 6 treys for 42 points.
The diference in the game was those free throws. St. T got to the line for 24 free throws and the Rams just 7. St. T made 15 free throws and the Rams 6, a 9-point advantage to ad to the 4-point edge from the field.
Malcolm Miller had a game-high 30 points in the loss. He scored 11 times, twice from the arc. He made all the Ram foul shots (6-of-7). No other Ram scored in double figures.
St. T had three players in double figures. Fitzpatrick led with 19, Hogan had 15 and Schmidt 14.
