The Stew-Stras seventh and eighth grade boys traveled to Effingham last Thursday taking a seventh grade win at 34-24 but losing in the eighth grade contest, 38-27.

In the seventh grade game, the Stars’ Henry Ballinger was the game high point man with 13 points. Brandon Helmuth and Clayton Brandt also played well, hitting for eight points each. Landon Collins was good for three points and Luke Rincker added two.

The seventh grade Stars took off with an 11-4 first period assault and continued to hold court in the second with an 8-5 effort. Going into the half, the Stars had a good 19-9 lead.

But Effingham came back out in the third and hit for nine points to the Stars eight. Despite making up some lost ground, Stew-Stras still held the lead going into the fourth at 28-17.

Effingham outscored the Stars again in the fourth by one points, but the big first period by the Stars was enough padding to maintain the lead and take the win, 34-24.

The seventh grade Stars are at 14-5 wins on the season and next play in the IESA 7A Regional at Stew-Stras.

The eighth graders faced some tough competition in their game, trailing 3-12 in the first period and 8-14 in the second. Despite a late fourth period rally of 11-5 points, the Stars did not have enough in the piggy bank to ring up the win and Effingham took the game 38-27.

Luke Rincker was the top dawg for the eighth grade Stars with 12 points, all from long distance Jon Hoene hit for seven, Travis Fry nailed down six and Jeremy Reel added a field goal.
