Coaches Doug Uphoff and Pat Boone’s vision for their Ram freshman team become reality last Thursday, as the Ram 9th traveled to Argenta-Oreana and beat the Bombers, 44-39.

“This is the team we knew we had,” said Coach Uphoff. “The freshmen became a team against the Bombers. Everyone made a contribution one way or another. The team had 13 assists, which shows good teamwork. Nick Nugent got very excited in the fourth quarter, after making an assist into Mast, who made the bucket and was fouled. Nick ended up with no points, but realized he scored 5 points in assists with good passes.”

David Mast was back to full strength and he and Elliott Uphoff led the Rams balanced scoring with eleven points each in a nip’n tuck affair. Jimm Cole was a demon on the backboards, snarfing up 13 of the Rams 30 rebounds.

Shelby led after one 13-11, was tied at the break, held a 3-point lead heading into the fourth and won by five.

Mast and Jimm Cole got the Rams rolling in the first, with 11 of the Rams 13 points. Mast had two buckets and 2-of-2 foul shooting, Cole with two bucket and 1-of-2 fee throws. Keith Boone added a two. Argenta stayed even with the help of an early trey.

Uphoff dialed in from long distance in the second and Boone and Drew Bosgraaf added solo two’s, but Argenta caught the Rams at the break, 20-20, thanks to another Bomber 3-bomb.

After the half the duel continued as both teams had three two-pointers and a trey, but then Jordan Gaston rained one down from the arc and gave the Rams an advantage. Cole and Kaleb Pruemer had solo two’s, Uphoff had another triple and Gaston led the Rams in the third with a deuce, then the go-ahead trey, 32-29.

In crunch time, Argenta hit a pair of treys and a deuce, while Uphoff had a Ram two and Mast converted a three-point play on the pass from Nugent and then another two. That made the score 39-37 Shelby.

On an inbounds play near the end of regulation, Uphoff ran the picket fence and nailed a three for a trey hat trick, with Jimm Cole ready to rebound and score if necessary, 42-37. Argenta came down and scored a bucket. Subsequently, Mast grabbed a rebound and got the ball to Uphoff who passed to Boone for two, back to a 5-point lead, 44-39. The Rams stole the inbound pass and Uphoff dribbled out the last 6.9 seconds for the win.

Coach Uphoff had additional comment on the contributions of some other role players like Nugent.

“Kaleb Pruemer who doesn’t get much floor time is importamt because he gives our big men rest and takes up a lot of room in the paint. Jimm Cole was like a patriot missile on the boards against the Bombers. Jim scored seven, while contributing 4 assists.

“Jordan Gaston really hustled on defense and used his long reach and quick reaction to give the Bombers a lot of trouble hitting their targets. Matt Karol played good “D” when giving Cole a rest, but couldn’t connect or get many shots off. Drew Bosgraaf had an off night, but was happy with the team victory.

“We need to use this victory to propel us on to better teamwork, so we can beat St. Teresa next Saturday.”
