Trinity St. Thomas champs

Stewardson Trinity volleyball was busy Friday and Saturday sweeping Sigel and then winning another tourney title.

On Friday the 7th and 8th grade Cardinals swept Sigel. Trinity 7th won, 25-20,25-22, and Trinity 8th won, 25-19, 25-13. On Saturday Trinity 7th (8-0) won the Newton St. Thomas Tourney, beating Dieterich 25-11, 25-7, Paris Crestwood, 25-10, 25-10, and Edwards County, 22-25, 25-13, 15-7.

Trinity rolls over most opponents without much opposition. That was the case in the first two matches at Newton. They dispatched with Dieterich by 32 points, winning by 14, then by 18. Trinity pummeled Paris by 30 points, winning by 15 points in each set. But then, they faced a stern test from Edwards County.

“I am very proud of this group,” said Trinity coach Tammy Manhart. “They have been in the shadows of a very talented 8th grade group for years. This was their turn to shine and they sure did. The championship match was a battle and they fought hard.”

Trinity took the 3-point, 1st set loss well and blasted Edwards County in the 2nd set by 12 points, 25-13. They doubled them up in the 3rd set tie-breaker, 15-7.

Trinity served up 65 aces in 3 matches (6.5 games), 21 per match. They hit 36 kills for a total of 101 attack points out of 162 total points (62%). They dished 35 assists towards 36 kills (97%). The defense scooped 49 digs.

Brenna Musson led Trinity at Newton with 45 service points and 33 of them (73.3%) were aces. She hit 4 kills for 37 attack points. She also led the defense with 13 digs.

Brinlie Durbin led at the net. She served 16 points with 2 aces and hit 18 kills for 20 attack points. Colby McCormick served 20 points with 11 aces. Alaira Friese served one point, an ace, and hit 9 kills for 10 attack points. Mya Friese dished out 24 assists and hd 4 aces and a kill, with 8 digs. Alaira had 8 digs and Kinley Quast had 8.

The night before, the 7th and 8th grade took on Sigel. The 7th won a close match, 25-20, 25-22, preparing them for the title match on Saturday. The 8th grade won easier, 25-19, 25-13.

The 7th served 13 aces in their match and hit 21 kills for 34 attack points out of 50 (68%). Durbin led at the line with 10 points and 4 aces (40%). She also led a balanced Trinity attack at the net with 5 kills for 9 attack points.

Six hitters shared 21 kills each with at least 3 kills. Seven players shared 13 aces. Brenna Musson served 6 points and 4 were aces (67%). She added 3 kills for 7 attack points.

Mya Friese dished a team-high 10 assists. and had 2 aces, 3 kills for 5 attack points. She led the defense with 4 digs. Mollie Slifer hit 4 kills, plus an ace for 5 attack points.

Friday 7th

Trinity def. Sigel, 25-20, 25-22

Trinity stats: Durbin 10 points, 4 aces, 5 kills, 9 assists, 3 digs; Musson 6 points, 4 aces, 3 kills, 2 digs; M Friese 4 points, 2 aces, 3 kills, 10 assists, 4 digs; Slifer 3 points, 1 aces, 4 kills, 1 assist; McCormick 4 points, 1 ace, 2 digs; A Friese 3 kills, 1 assist, 1 dig; Beitz 1 point, 1 ace, 3 kills.

The Trinity 8th won by 6, then stretched their margin to 12 in the 2nd set.

They served 11 aces and hit 28 kills with a block for 40 attack points out of 50 (80%). They dished 21 assists towards the 28 kills, giving them 7 free balls and or 1-timer kills. They scooped 16 digs.

The hitters were a 3-headed monster. Gabby Vonderheide hit 8 kills, Ella Kinkelaar hit 7 and Halle Moomaw hit 7, plus the lone block.

At the line Kinkelaar served 6 aces from 11 points (55%) to give her 13 attack points. Vonderheide added an ace for 9 attack points. Moomaw had 8 attack points. Wernsing had 5 attack points with an ace and 4 kills.

Alaira Friese dished a team-high 11 assists Kinkelaar with 9. Kinley Quast led the balanced defense with 5 digs
