The Windsor/Stew-Stras baseball team (5-8) had a temporary lead against St. Elmo on Monday, but the Eagles out-scored WSS 7-1 in the next 3 innings to seal their fate. WSS got thumped 9-4.

One key to the St. Elmo success was their two pitchers striking out 15 Hatchet batters in the game. They walked just 2 and hit one. WSS’s 2 hurlers KO’d 10 to try to keep things close and walked just 3, while hitting one.

Logan Greuel came on for WSS in the 4th and shut St E down with 9 Ks in 4 innings. Philpot came on in the 5th for St E and did likewise with 8 Ks in 3 innings.

WSS committed no errors, while St E had two.

However, St. Elmo out-hit the Hatchets 12 to 5. WSS had a double and a home run. St. E had 3 doubles and a home run.

Pruett led off the game with a St E double. With one out Atwood singled him home, 1-0. WSS made plays on grounders and got out of the 1st.

WSS responded early. Colin Kinkelaar led off with single. With two outs, Gavan Wernsing launched a 2-run home run to right field for the lead, 2-0. Sam Vonderheide followed with a single, but was stranded.

St E regained the lead in the 2nd, as they started their 3-inning scoring spree. Maxey singled with one out and Goldsborough walked. With two outs, Pruett walked to load the bases. Philpot stroked a 2-run double to get the 3-2 lead. WSS had a Graham Kasey single in the 2nd, but he was forced out.

Himes opened the St E 3rd with a solo home run. Viramontes, the pitcher, singled. Maxey was hit by a pitch. Goldsborough singled a run home, 6-2. WSS pitcher Trey Sayers threw a K, then Goldsborough was caught stealing home on a throw from catcher Kinkelaar to Sayers covering home.

WSS got a run back in the 3rd. Beau Bennett walked. With one out, Wernsing reached on an error and Bennett got to 3rd. Vonderheide grounded out to 3rd, but Bennett scored, 6-3.

Pruett hit his second double in the 4th. Logan Greuel came in to pitch and threw a K. Atwood walked with one out. Viramontes hit a 2-out, 2-run single. Greuel threw another K, but WSS was down 8-3.

All three WSS batters were struck out in the 4th. Greuel struck out three batters in the St. E 5th. But one was thrown out at 1st on a dropped 3rd strike. He also gave up a single.

In the WSS 5th, Kinkelaar led off with walk and got to 2nd on a wild pitch. Bennett smacked a double, scoring Kinkelaar with no outs, 8-4. Two Ks and a pick-off ended the chance. St E got that run back in the 6th. Philpot singled and stole 2nd. Himes singled, making it 9-4.

Vonderheide reached on an error in the WSS 6th, but 3 Ks by Philpot finished it. Greuel struck out the sides in the St E 7th. Down by 5, WSS had their work cut out in the 7th. The first two batters struck out. Bennett was hit by a pitch, but the next batter struck out looking.
