Windsor/Stew-Stras girls basketball tried to knockout Neoga in the Neoga 1A Regional semifinal on Tuesday, but Neoga stood for the final bell and won, 49-43.

WSS opened the game with a, 15-5, run, posting a 10-point lead. However, Neoga steadied themselves and counter-punched with a, 20-11, run in the 2nd period, to trail by just one at the break, 26-25.

It was new ball game in the 3rd, and this time Neoga took the initiative, stumping WSS and holding them to just four points. The 12-4 run, gave Neoga a 7-point edge heading into crunch time, 37-30.

Even though the Hatchets out-scored Neoga in the 4th frame, it wasn’t enough to get the knockout or the decision. WSS took the 4th 13-12 and was only able to trim the Neoga lead to 6 by the final bell, 49-43.

Neoga keyed on Hatchet post player Mikala Nichols. She still scored 13 points and snared 14 rebounds for a double-double in her season finale. She shot 43% from the field.

Hannah Hayes the junior guard led WSS with 19 points, shooting 40% from the field, making 5-of-10 shots (50%) in close and 3 of 10 from the arc (30%) for a trey hat trick.

Junior guard Chloe Dasenbrock came through with 5 points, making 3-of-4 at the line and dishing a team-high 5 assists with 2 steals. Freshman Natalie Hayes scored 6 points, also making 3-of-4 foul shots.

Windsor/Stew-Stras finished the season with a record of 16-13 (2-6 NTC). Nichols scored 443 points (15.3 ppg) and 374 rebounds (12.9 rpg) with 77 steals (2.7 spg) and 64 blocks (2.2 bpg). Hannah Hayes finished with 387 points (13.3 ppg) and 122 rebounds (4.2 rpg), 85 assists (2.9 apg).
